    Charging the Battery The battery is not charged at shipment. Charge the battery before use. Batteries The camera uses an NP-50 rechargeable battery. Place the battery in the charger. Insert the battery into the supplied battery charger as shown, making sure that the bat- tery is in the orientation indicated by the D B C labels.

    g Intelligent Face Detection and Red-Eye Removal Intelligent Face Detection allows the camera to automatically detect human faces and set focus and exposure for a face anywhere in the frame for shots that emphasize portrait subjects. Choose for group portraits (in vertical or horizontal orientations) to prevent the camera from focusing on the back- ground.

    F Macro Mode (Close-ups) For close-ups, press the selector left (F). F is displayed in macro mode. When macro mode is in eff ect, the camera focuses on subjects near the center of the frame. Use the zoom control to compose pictures. To exit macro mode, press the selector left (F).

    N Using the Flash (Intelligent Flash) When the fl ash is used, the camera’s Intelligent Flash system instantly analyzes the scene based on such factors as the brightness of the subject, its position in the frame, and its distance from the camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted to ensure that the main subject is correctly exposed while preserving the eff ects of ambient background lighting, even in dimly-lit indoor scenes.

    h Using the Self-Timer The camera off ers a ten-second timer that allows photographers to appear in their own photographs, and a two-second timer that can be used to avoid blur caused by the camera moving when the shutter button is pressed. The self-timer is available in all shooting modes. Set the timer.
  • Page 45 The self-timer lamp on the front of the camera will blink immediately before the picture is taken. If the two-sec- ond timer is selected, the self-timer lamp will blink as the timer counts down. Intelligent Face Detection Because it ensures that the faces of portrait subjects will be in focus, Intelligent Face Detection (pg. 20) is recom- mended when using the self-timer for group portraits or self-portraits.
