  • Page 22: Introduction

Working Area Requirements Introduction Introduction The choice of site will be influenced by the dimensions and weights of the spectrometer and accessories. Other factors are the environment and the availability of electricity, water and gas supplies, as well as the need for a suitable ventilation system to dispose of the exhaust gases.
  • Page 23: Location

Working Area Requirements Location Location The instruments are designed for use on a normal laboratory bench. See Figure 5-1. Furnace printer mouse pad 420 mm 480 mm 222 mm 780 mm 282 mm Figure 5-1. Typical location diagram for iCE 3000 Series AA spectrometers Ensure that the exhaust is correctly positioned above the LH compartment (flame, EC100, T-Cell or Mercury-Cell) and RH compartment (furnace).
  • Page 24: Environmental Requirements

Working Area Requirements Environmental Requirements Ideally, the instrument should be placed on a movable bench with 50 cm of access behind the instrument. The mounting surface must be level and the instruments must not be placed on any type of cushioning as this could block ventilation.
  • Page 25 Working Area Requirements Electrical Requirements An additional 200/208/220-240 VAC, 1.5 kVA, 50/60 Hz is required for a Zeeman furnace power supply unit (see label near appliance inlet for individual voltage setting). Permanent Connection If the furnace is permanently connected to the mains (instead of a plug-and-socket connection), a disconnection device and suitable fusing must be provided by the building installation.
  • Page 26: Spectrometer Size

Working Area Requirements Spectrometer Size Multiple installations require separate mains supplies. Additional standard mains sockets are required for the Data Station and the printer, for an extended autosampler, for a chiller and for each additional accessory. Each electrical outlet must have an effective earth/ground connection. This protection must not be negated by using an extension cable without a protective earth conductor.

  • Page 28: Acetylene

Working Area Requirements Gas Requirements Acetylene A flame spectrometer requires acetylene at 0.62 bar (9 psi) with flow rates of between 0.8 and 5.1 L/min. The purity must be at least 98.5%, with impurities for sulfur and phosphorus of less than 15 ppm, and water of less than 100 ppm.
  • Page 29: Air

Working Area Requirements Gas Requirements If pressures above 0.62 bar (9 psi) acetylene are used in the UK, the Health and Safety Executive of HM Factory Inspectorate must be informed and an Exemption Certificate obtained. Local and national regulations and guidelines must be followed at all installation sites. The spectrometer requires clean, dry compressed air at a steady pressure of 2.1 bar (30 psi), with a flow rate up to 10 L/min.
  • Page 30: Water Temperature Control

Working Area Requirements Water Temperature Control A two stage regulator is required to provide good precision and stable flame conditions. It may be necessary to fit a heater to the regulator to prevent freezing, which would cause flow rate variations and an unstable flame.
  • Page 31: Waste Storage

Working Area Requirements Waste Storage Waste Storage The analysis of a sample by flame atomic absorption usually involves production of a fine mist from a liquid sample. Waste is produced that could be corrosive or toxic, or an organic solvent. An appropriate container is required that is solvent proof, shatterproof and vented away from the instrument.
  • Page 32: Spectrometer Fume Extraction

Working Area Requirements Spectrometer Fume Extraction Spectrometer Fume Extraction The spectrometer is designed to operate in clean air conditions. The laboratory must be free of all contaminants that could have a degrading effect on the components of the instrument. Dust, acid and organic vapors must be excluded from the work area. The warranty will be void, if the equipment is operated in substandard conditions.
  • Page 33 Working Area Requirements Spectrometer Fume Extraction • The hood and the first meters of the duct become hot, especially when working with a nitrous oxide flame. Thermo Fisher Scientific recommends marking the hood over the spectrometer with a hot surface marking. •...
  • Page 34 Working Area Requirements Spectrometer Fume Extraction • Suitable extraction must also be used for the EC100 if used instead of a flame, and in particular for the Mercury-Cell (toxic fumes) used with no flame or EC100. For details, refer to the iCE 3000 Series Operating Manual.
