    Safety Safety is always of prime importance when operating any type of equipment. All operators working with the must be aware of the UTOMIZER ERSA safety practices and features detailed in this section. Conventions Danger! Indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in serious injury or death.

    4 Safety Danger! Always be aware of the vehicle’s surroundings to make sure that no pedestrians, passersby, bystanders, or other people or vehicles are in any way exposed to any danger caused by the use of the A UTOMIZER ERSA Danger! Never get in the hopper area when the engine is running.

    Safety 5 To establish and ensure the application of a “lockout/tagout” procedure any time inspection, repair or maintenance is performed on the vehicle, regardless of whether it takes place on the road or in the garage. Employee’s Responsibilities It is the responsibility of the employee: To enforce all safety measures to meet the requirements established by the employer.

    In such cases, Labrie Environmental Group must be informed of every and all units that will be MPORTANT operated by more than one worker. Labrie Environmental Group will then determine and supply, at the customer’s expense, the required safety items.
  • Page 13 Safety 7 For any work (including cleaning and inspecting) that has to be done between the body and the chassis, always use the body safety prop. Also, the vehicle must be on level ground. Before opening and closing the tailgate and/or raising the body, make sure that there is no one behind the vehicle.

    8 Safety Fire The employer must inform and train all personnel on the measures that must be taken in case of a vehicle and/or loaded body catching fire. Anytime a loaded vehicle is brought inside a garage, fire extinguishers shall be close at hand. The employer must also inform employees of an appropriate place to unload the body near the maintenance facility (preferably away from traffic, surface drains, and ditches).

    Safety 21 84404 104539 : Labels may vary depending on the options and features installed on the unit. Safety Features Global Motion Sensors (Optional) This OPTIONAL safety system is used to detect objects located behind the truck. This system is turned on by placing the transmission in reverse.
  • Page 28 22 Safety The main components of this system are a control box, located in the cab, sensors, located on the rear bumper, and the solenoid valve located on the chassis. When the system is turned on, a green light on the cab control box should light up to indicate that the system is operating.

Back Up Alarm The back up alarm sounds when the truck is in reverse, the tailgate opens or the truck body rises. Body Safety Prop Safety props ensure that heavy body parts will not move inadvertently.
  • Page 30 24 Safety Setting the Body Safety Prop The body safety prop ensures that an empty body will not lower when you are working underneath it. Danger! Always set the body safety prop when performing maintenance underneath a raised body. Failure to do so may result in severe injury, or even death.     Safety 25 Figure 2-3 Safety prop handle Lower the body until it rests on the safety prop. Lock out and tag out the vehicle (see Locking Out and Taging Out the Vehicle on page 31). You can now work safely underneath the body. Putting the Body Safety Prop Back in Place To put the body safety prop back in place: Make sure that there is enough clearance above the body to raise it safely.

Setting the Tailgate Safety Prop To set the tailgate safety prop: Make sure that the body is empty. Remove the tailgate-locking mechanism safety pins.
  • Page 33 Safety 27 Turn on the pump. Danger! Prior to raising the tailgate, make sure that no one is standing behind the vehicle and that the body is empty. With the tailgate control lever in the cab control panel, raise the tailgate about 3 feet (enough to raise the safety prop).

Ensure that the equipment works properly by removing any compacted garbage in the packer area after each body unloading. Clean all the lights and safety labels so you and the surrounding pedestrians and drivers will be aware of the truck at all times.

Turn off the engine, remove the key from the ignition, store it in a safe and controlled area (preferably on yourself), and tape over the ignition switch. Turn off and lock the master switch.

    Before using the right-hand side driving position make sure that all controls are properly set. Driving Speed If the cab of the vehicle has been modified by Labrie Environmental Group (right-hand side driving position) for door-to-door waste collection, the maximum speed limit while driving at the right-hand side is, if permitted, 20 mph (32 km/h).

    (see Figure 2-17). Right-Hand Side Driving Position The following procedure applies ONLY to cabs that had been modified by Labrie Environmental Group. It must be followed at the beginning, but also at the end of the collection route in order to revert to the left-hand side driving position.

    Controls and Indicators The A has a series of UTOMIZER ERSA controls and indicators that allow easier operation of the different functions that come with the vehicle. These controls and indicators are mainly located on the cab console and on the dashboard. Cab Console The cab console is located in the middle of the cab for easy access during collection and operation.
  • Page 44 38 Controls and Indicators Signal lamp Pump switch : Do not close the main valve (ball valve) on the suction line even if the PTO switch is turned off. The pump is always turning whatever the engine RPM. It is very important not to let the pump run dry or without oil.

    Controls and Indicators 39 Tailgate Control Switch control switch is a 3-position switch that allows the operator to control the tailgate TAILGATE (see Figure 3-3). When the truck is equipped with two tailgates (optional co-mingle body), an electrical switch located on the cab console allows the operator to choose between the right tailgate and the left tailgate.

Move this switch to the left to deactivate the right-hand side arm control joystick. Crusher Panel Control Switch (optional) The control switch for the crusher panel is fully manual (standard unit) and is located on the cab console (see Figure 3-7).

    42 Controls and Indicators Figure 3-8 Crusher panel The crusher panel can be lowered upon refuse to prevent refuse from popping up in front of the packing ram, increasing the compaction at any time and also during the load-breaking sequence. To help during the unloading sequence, you should leave a good amount of garbage in front of the packer and under the lowered crusher panel as you finish your route.

To deactivate the auto-packing function, turn the switch to the left. Gripper Auto-Close Override The gripper (or grabber) auto-close override function (standard) allows the operator to open the gripper while in the hopper in order to throw away the grabbed object directly in it.

    44 Controls and Indicators Auto-Neutral Switch The auto-neutral system is available on units equipped with an Allison electronic transmission. The auto-neutral allows the operator to shift from “drive” to “neutral” automatically without touching the shifter lever. For more information on this, refer to the chassis manufacturer’s manual. Here UTOMIZER ERSA is a description of all the control switches and buttons found on the packer control station. Stop Push Button (red) The Emergency Stop button will stop all hydraulic functions on the truck (tailgate, body hoist, etc.).

This control is useful when the body is full and the material prevents the packer from reaching the end of its stroke. Manual retraction of the packer is necessary to bring back the packer.

It can be located either on the console at the center of the cab or near the right-hand side door. In some units, two joysticks are installed in the cab: one on the console, the other near the right-hand side door.

MPORTANT Shift the joystick forward at 90° toward the grabber down lettering (see Figure 3-19) to lower the grabber. Shift the joystick forward at 45° between the grabber down and arm extend lettering to lower the grabber and extend the arm.

This careful sequence helps the brake systems of your A UTOMIZER unit last longer and perform better.

    56 Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA parked at the most convenient place where you will have all the clearance required to perform a complete start-of-the-day inspection. During the daily inspection, look for any structural damage. Inspect tires and check the hydraulic tank for air leaks. Visual Inspection Before starting the vehicle, the operator MUST perform a visual inspection of the truck.

    Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Body Inspection Procedure Exit the cab to continue your inspection. Bring a rag along to clean all accessible lights, labels, camera lenses, etc. Check for mechanical problems: rollers, hinges, door-locking mechanisms, wear items, etc. Report any defective system to the maintenance personnel. Body inspection procedure: Activate the packer for a full cycle.

Report any defective system to maintenance personnel. To inspect the right-hand side driving controls, do the following: Test the steering wheel by turning it left and right as you are slowly moving the truck forward.

    Out and Taging Out the Vehicle on page 31. Hopper Description and Loading The AUTOMIZER VERSA HAND™ has a packer swept volume of 1.75 cubic yards. The packer swept volume is reached by using a 24-inch high packer blade with a 52-inch stroke.

Packer Description The packer, made of high strength steel, travels the hopper to push the refuse into the body. If any piece of garbage exceeds above the packer, it will be crushed or bent against the rear breaker bar, located just above the opening of the body.

    Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Pull the joystick to raise the grabber inside the hopper. The garbage should then fall down. Ensure that the roller cart is empty before returning it back to the ground. Move the joystick forward to lower the grabber. If needed, extend the arm to place the cart back where it was.

    66 Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Unloading Once you have completed your collection route, make sure the arm is parked alongside the truck, and the crusher panel is lowered. Keep some garbage not packed in front of the packer in order to facilitate the unloading process.

    Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Figure 4-5 Safety pin Fully open the tailgate. Raise the body. Garbage should slide out. Slowly move the vehicle forward to prevent the garbage from piling up under the tailgate. This is the only time you can move the truck with body raised. Do it very cautiously and cover the shortest distance possible.

Once finished, slightly raise the body and put the safety prop back to its vertical position.

    Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Make sure the tailgate is fully open. Make sure the air pressure is above 70 psi. Check all fuses in the console. Contact the maintenance facility if there is no change. If equipped with air suspension, it needs to be dropped. If equipped with a tag axle, it must be lowered.

    70 Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Clean all accumulated dirt under cylinder brackets and inside the side tracks using the hoe and pressurized water if necessary. Be careful with proximity switches to prevent misalignment. Perform a visual inspection for leaks or wear in this area. Rake small pieces of garbage out of the clean-out doors using the hoe.
  • Page 77 Operating the A UTOMIZER ERSA Install the control lever on the arm extend/retract section of the proportional valve located on the right-hand side of the vehicle. Using the control lever, retract the arm slowly in order to bring it back to its home position. Danger! Stay clear of the path of the arm at all times and do not open the grabber in mid-air when performing this procedure.
