    Front Seats Manual Seats CAUTION: You can lose control of the vehicle if you try to adjust a manual driver’s seat while the vehicle is moving. The sudden movement could startle and confuse you, or make you push a pedal when you do not want to.
  • Page 9 If your vehicle is not equipped with easy entry seats, your passenger seat adjuster looks like this. Slide the lever located under the passenger’s seat to the right to unlock it. Slide the seat to where you want it and release the lever.

    Reclining Seatbacks To adjust the seatback, lift the lever located on the outboard side of the seat and move the seatback to where you want it. Release the lever and push rearward on the seatback to make sure it is locked. Pull up on the lever without pushing on the seatback and the seatback will go to an upright position.

    CAUTION: Sitting in a reclined position when your vehicle is in motion can be dangerous. Even if you buckle up, your safety belts can not do their job when you are reclined like this. The shoulder belt can not do its job because it will not be against your body.

    Seatback Latches If your vehicle is a two-door model, the front seatback folds forward to let people get into the back seat. To fold a front seatback forward, lift the latch located on the lower back side of the seatback and push the seatback forward.

    Easy Entry Seat CAUTION: If the easy entry right front seat is not locked, it can move. In a sudden stop or crash, the person sitting there could be injured. After you have used it, be sure to push rearward on an easy entry seat to be sure it is locked.

    Rear Seats 60/40 Split Bench Seat To fold the seatback, do the following: 1. Pull the release straps located in the trunk. The right strap operates the passenger’s side rear split seat. The left strap operates the driver’s side rear split seat.

    If I am a good driver, and I never drive far from home, why should I wear safety belts? You may be an excellent driver, but if you are in an accident — even one that is not your fault — you and your passengers can be hurt.

    Driver Position Lap-Shoulder Belt The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here is how to wear it properly. 1. Close and lock the door. 2. Adjust the seat so you can sit up straight. To see how, see “Seats” in the Index. 3.
  • Page 22 5. To make the lap part tight, pull down on the buckle end of the belt as you pull up on the shoulder belt. The lap part of the belt should be worn low and snug on the hips, just touching the thighs. In a crash, this applies force to the strong pelvic bones.
  • Page 23 What is wrong with this? The shoulder belt is too loose. It will not give nearly as much protection this way. CAUTION: You can be seriously hurt if your shoulder belt is too loose. In a crash, you would move forward too much, which could increase injury.

CAUTION: You can be seriously injured if you wear the shoulder belt under your arm. In a crash, your body would move too far forward, which would increase the chance of head and neck injury.

In a crash, you would not have the full width of the belt to spread impact forces. If a belt is twisted, make it straight so it can work properly, or ask your dealer to fix it.

    To unlatch the belt, just push the button on the buckle. The belt should go back out of the way. Before you close the door, be sure the belt is out of the way. If you slam the door on it, you can damage both the belt and your vehicle.

    Safety Belt Use During Pregnancy Safety belts work for everyone, including pregnant women. Like all occupants, they are more likely to be seriously injured if they do not wear safety belts. A pregnant woman should wear a lap-shoulder belt, and the lap portion should be worn as low as possible, below the rounding, throughout the pregnancy.

    Lap-Shoulder Belt All rear seating positions have lap-shoulder belts. Here is how to wear one properly. 1. Pick up the latch plate and pull the belt across you. Do not let it get twisted. The shoulder belt may lock if you pull the belt across you very quickly.

    Rear Safety Belt Comfort Guides for Children and Small Adults Rear shoulder belt comfort guides will provide added safety belt comfort for older children who have outgrown booster seats and for small adults. When installed on a shoulder belt, the comfort guide better positions the belt away from the neck and head.

Then, place the guide over the belt, and insert the two edges of the belt into the slots of the guide. 3. Be sure that the belt is not twisted and it lies flat. The elastic cord must be under the belt and the guide on top.

    4. Buckle, position and release the safety belt as described in Rear Seat Passengers on page 1-22. Make sure that the shoulder belt crosses the shoulder. To remove and store the comfort guides, squeeze the belt edges together so that you can take them out of the guides.

    Child Restraints Older Children Older children who have outgrown booster seats should wear the vehicle’s safety belts. What is the proper way to wear safety belts? If possible, an older child should wear a lap-shoulder belt and get the additional restraint a shoulder belt can provide.

In a crash, the two children can be crushed together and seriously injured.     CAUTION: Never do this. Here a child is sitting in a seat that has a lap-shoulder belt, but the shoulder part is behind the child. If the child wears the belt in this way, in a crash the child might slide under the belt.
  • Page 38 CAUTION: People should never hold a baby in their arms while riding in a vehicle. A baby does not weigh much — until a crash. During a crash a baby will become so heavy it is not possible to hold it. For example, in a crash at only 25 mph (40 km/h), a 12-lb (5.5 kg) baby will suddenly become a 240-lb (110 kg) force on a person’s arms.
  • Page 39 CAUTION: Children who are up against, or very close to, any airbag when it inflates can be seriously injured or killed. Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants. Neither the vehicle’s safety belt system nor its airbag system is designed for them.
  • Page 40 What are the different types of add-on child restraints? Add-on child restraints, which are purchased by the vehicle’s owner, are available in four basic types. Selection of a particular restraint should take into consideration not only the child’s weight, height and age but also whether or not the restraint will be compatible with the motor vehicle in which it will be used.

    CAUTION: The body structure of a young child is quite unlike that of an adult or older child, for whom the safety belts are designed. A young child’s hip bones are still so small that the vehicle’s regular safety belt may not remain low on the hip bones, as it should.
  • Page 42 A rear-facing infant seat (B) provides restraint with the seating surface against the back of the infant. The harness system holds the infant in place and, in a crash, acts to keep the infant positioned in the restraint. 1-36 A forward-facing child seat (C-E) provides restraint for the child’s body with the harness and also sometimes with surfaces such as T-shaped or shelf-like shields.
  • Page 43 A booster seat (F-G) is a child restraint designed to improve the fit of the vehicle’s safety belt system. Some booster seats have a shoulder belt positioner, and some high-back booster seats have a five-point harness. A booster seat can also help a child to see out the window.

    When choosing a child restraint, be sure the child restraint is designed to be used in a vehicle. If it is, it will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards. Then follow the instructions for the restraint. You may find these instructions on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both.

    Top Strap Some child restraints have a top strap, or “top tether.” It can help restrain the child restraint during a collision. For it to work, a top strap must be properly anchored to the vehicle. Some top strap-equipped child restraints are designed for use with or without the top strap being anchored.

    Anchor the top strap to an anchor point specified in Top Strap Anchor Location on page 1-40. Be sure to use an anchor point located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed.

    Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) Your vehicle has the LATCH system. You will find anchors for the rear outside seating positions. This system, designed to make installation of child restraints easier, does not use the vehicle’s safety belts. Instead, it uses vehicle anchors and child restraint attachments to secure the restraints.

    The labels are located near the base of the two rear outside seating positions. CAUTION: If a LATCH-type child restraint is not attached to its anchorage points, the restraint will not be able to protect the child correctly. In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed.

    Securing a Child Restraint in a Rear Seat Position If your child restraint is equipped with the LATCH system, see Lower Anchorages and Top Tethers for Children (LATCH System) on page 1-41. If your child restraint does not have the LATCH system, you will be using the lap-shoulder belt to secure the child restraint in this position.

But these airbags must inflate very quickly to do their job and comply with federal regulations. If you are too close to an inflating airbag, as you would be if you were leaning forward, it could seriously injure you. Safety belts help keep you in position for airbag inflation before and during a crash.

    There is an airbag readiness light on the instrument panel cluster, which shows the airbag symbol. The system checks the airbag electrical system for malfunctions. The light tells you if there is an electrical problem. See Airbag Readiness Light on page 3-25 for more information.

    What Makes an Airbag Inflate? In an impact of sufficient severity, the airbag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash. For both frontal and side impact airbags, the sensing system triggers a release of gas from the inflator, which inflates the airbag.
  • Page 61 CAUTION: When an airbag inflates, there is dust in the air. This dust could cause breathing problems for people with a history of asthma or other breathing trouble. To avoid this, everyone in the vehicle should get out as soon as it is safe to do so.

    Keys CAUTION: Leaving children in a vehicle with the ignition key is dangerous for many reasons. They could operate the power windows or other controls or even make the vehicle move. The children or others could be badly injured or even killed.
  • Page 67: Remote Keyless Entry System

    One key is used for the ignition, the doors and all other locks. When a new vehicle is delivered, the dealer removes the key tag from the key and gives it to the first owner. Each tag has a code on it that tells your dealer or a qualified locksmith how to make extra keys.

    At times you may notice a decrease in range. This is normal for any remote keyless entry system. If the transmitter does not work or if you have to stand closer to your vehicle for the transmitter to work, try this: •...

    Radio Personalization Your vehicle can store different radio preset stations depending on which keyless entry transmitter you use to unlock the doors. The radio will recall all the stored settings associated with that transmitter. Any radio setting changes will be assigned to the transmitter last used to unlock the doors.
  • Page 71 To replace the battery in the transmitter: 1. Use a coin or similar object to separate the bottom half from the top half of the transmitter. 2. Remove the battery and replace it with the new one. Make sure the positive side of the battery faces down.

    Doors and Locks Door Locks CAUTION: Unlocked doors can be dangerous. • Passengers — especially children — can easily open the doors and fall out of a moving vehicle. When a door is locked, the handle will not open it. You increase the chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in a crash if the doors are not locked.

    Power Door Locks If your vehicle has this feature, you can lock or unlock all the doors on your vehicle from the driver’s or front passenger’s door lock switch. Press the lower portion of the switch to lock the doors. Press the upper portion of the switch to unlock the doors.

    Opening a Rear Door When the Security Lock is On 1. Unlock the door from the inside. 2. Then open the door from the outside. If you do not cancel the security lock feature, adults or older children who ride in the rear will not be able to open the rear door from the inside.

    CAUTION: It can be dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open because carbon monoxide (CO) gas can come into your vehicle. You cannot see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness and even death.     Emergency Trunk Release Handle Notice: Using the emergency trunk release handle as a tie-down or anchor point when securing items in the trunk may damage it. Use the emergency trunk release handle only to help you open the trunk lid. There is a glow-in-the-dark emergency trunk release handle located on the inside of the trunk lid of your vehicle.

    Power Windows The switches are located on the center console. On four-door models, each rear passenger door has a control switch for that window. The power windows operate when the ignition is ON. To lower a window, press and hold the rear of the switch.

    Express-Down Window The driver’s window switch has an express-down feature. The driver’s window can be opened to the desired position by pressing the rear of the switch to the first position. To use the express-down feature, press the rear of the switch all the way down. The window will continue going down until fully opened.

    Disarming the System If the system is armed, press the UNLOCK button on the transmitter to disarm the system. The THEFT SYSTEM light will stop flashing.     ® Passlock Your vehicle is equipped with the ® Passlock theft-deterrent system. ® Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent system. ® Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinder is turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used or the ignition lock cylinder is tampered with, fuel is disabled.

    Ignition Positions With the key in the ignition, you can turn to five different positions. A (ACCESSORY): This position operates your electrical accessories. Press in the ignition switch as you turn it toward you. B (LOCK): This position locks your ignition when the key is removed.
  • Page 82 C (OFF): This position unlocks the steering wheel (for vehicle’s equipped with a manual transaxle) and ignition, but does not send power to any accessories. Use this position if your vehicle must be pushed or towed, but never try to push-start your vehicle. A warning chime will sound if you open the driver’s door when the ignition is in OFF and the key is in the ignition.

    Retained Accessory Power (RAP) Your vehicle is equipped with a Retained Accessory Power (RAP) feature which will allow the radio to continue to work up to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned to OFF. Your radio will work when the ignition key is in RUN or ACCESSORY.

    Notice: Your engine is designed to work with the electronics in your vehicle. If you add electrical parts or accessories, you could change the way the engine operates. Before adding electrical equipment, check with your dealer. If you do not, your engine might not perform properly.

    Automatic Transaxle Operation If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle, the shift lever is located on the console between the seats. There are several different positions for your shift lever. PARK (P): This position locks your front wheels. It is the best position to use when you start your engine because your vehicle cannot move easily.

    REVERSE (R): Use this gear to back up. Notice: Shifting to REVERSE (R) while your vehicle is moving forward could damage the transaxle. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty.     Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking. For example, you come over a hill and find a truck stopped in your lane, or a car suddenly pulls out from nowhere, or a child darts out from between parked cars and stops right in front of you.
