HomePlug standards
HomePlug is a networking standard for transferring data via
the available electrical wiring in the building (so-called "in-
house powerline communication"). The standard was developed by the HomePlug-Alliance,
which includes leading companies such as Sony, Motorola, Samsung, LG and Intel among
others. Version 1.0 primarily applies to data and audio transfer. These devices offer
maximum speed of 14 Mbps within a range of approximately 200m of an electric circuit. For
modern uses with large volumes of data, this bandwidth comes nowhere to dealing with this
capacity. For this reason a new standard has been set.
The HomePlug AV standard is a further development of the HomePlug 1.0 standard and
offers a data transfer rate of up to 200 Mbps. The benefits of this high speed are leading to
completely new applications, an example of which is "Triple Play". This covers the
simultaneous use of data lines for fast internet, as well as internet TV (IPTV, HD quality),
video on demand and VoIP telephony.
What devolo offers for the consumer
Since 2003 devolo has been offering solutions that facilitate data transfer
via the electrical wiring in a building and meet HomePlug standards.
Examples include dLAN duo and dLAN Audio extender. With dLAN
Highspeed Ethernet and dLAN Wireless extender, devolo has built the
bridge to the next standard, because the data transfer rate of this device
has risen to 85 Mbps.
