Radioactivity
3 different kinds of radiation are known:
Alfa rays. These particles appear to have a short radiation zone. (only a few centimetre in open air
and a few hundreds of millimetre in the human skin). Alfa rays can be stopped by a sheet of paper.
Beta-rays have a radiation area of 5 meter in open air and 1 cm in organic material.
Beta-radiation is halted by a thin metal shield.
Gamma-rays have much more energy. That's why this kind of radiation penetrates in most kind of
materials. lt requires leaden plates or concrete walls to stop them.
Cosmic rays and radioactive minerals in the earth are known as "natural radioactivity".
Scientific use of radioactivity has found applications in medicines, geological research, producing energy etc ..
Careful
Take extreme care when dealing with radioactivity.
Make sure to comply with all legal requirements regarding the protection against
radiation. This instrument is not equipped with a numerical readout, it is not
calibrated and it does not measure absolute radiation levels. Hence it is not suited
as or as part of any setup intended to determine if a certain presence of radiation is
harmful to humans, animals or goods. If you have any doubt regarding radioactivity,
consult your local authorities.
