    We have designed Hero so that people of all ages (even your parents!) can set up and operate it. All you have to do is plug the Hero Pill Dispenser in and its screen will guide you through the rest. The Hero Pill Dispenser requires a Wi-Fi connection and can be set up using an Android or iOS mobile device.

    Hero Pill Dispenser. It is not a replacement for the guidance of a healthcare professional, your attention to correct dosing, nor to replace an attentive and qualified caregiver, should one be required by the medication recipient.

    The Hero Pill Dispenser is designed to function on a flat and level surface. If it is ever tilted over, subject to motion or vibration or otherwise mishandled, you must open the door with the Pill Access key and verify that the medications are in their proper cartridge before you continue to use the device.

    Setup 1. Remove Hero from the box and place it on a level, sturdy, indoor surface. Be sure to handle Hero by grasping the sides or lifting from the bottom. CAUTION: Hero should be kept away from humidity and moisture and operated consistently with its technical...
  • Page 10 2. Remove the lock compartment cover on the rear of the Hero Pill Dispenser. 3. Pull the travel bar out of the lock compartment. 4. Thread the travel bar into the travel bar holder for safekeeping. 5. Replace the lock compartment cover. Remove the sticker covering the power port on the back of Hero.
  • Page 11: Getting To Know The Hero Pill Dispenser Interface

    If you are comfortable using the Hero interface after following the tutorial, feel free to skip this section. The Hero interface consists of an LED screen and five buttons. Each arrow is a button, as is the center circle.

    Additionally, you can back out of any screen by pressing the left arrow button. First-Time Use After you’re finished with the tutorial, Hero will be ready to be set up. Be sure to have all the medications you want to use with Hero nearby.

    Create account . This email address and password will be the credentials you use to log in either on the Hero website or in the app. 6. Hero will send a confirmation email to the email address you entered in step 5. Open the confirmation email on your phone and select Continue setup .

    ● The Hero Pill Dispenser can store up to 10 medications. ● You can add more than 10 medications to your Hero account but they will need to be stored outside of Hero. Hero will still notify you to take those outside medications via on-screen and in-app notifications.
  • Page 16 3. If there is more than one type of a certain medication (i.e. Tylenol and acetaminophen), choose which type is appropriate. 4. Choose the dose form of the medication. Depending on the medication you entered, different forms will be available to select from.
  • Page 17 6. Enter the Expiration date of this medication. When asked if you will store this in Hero, select Yes if you plan to do so. However, you can choose to use the Hero app as a notification system only, and not store and dispense medication inside Hero.
  • Page 18 7. Choose whether you take the medication at a Scheduled Time or As Needed . 8. If As Needed , select Finished . If at a Scheduled Time , continue with the steps below. a. Choose Everyday if you take this medication at least once a day or choose Select Days if you take this medication only on certain days as indicated on the prescription label.

    13. The passcode feature limits access by others, such as children who may be able to reach Hero. It requires you to enter a four-digit code using the Hero interface for Hero to dispense. If you would like to implement the passcode, select Use passcode . Otherwise, select No Thanks and skip to Set Up Notifications, below.

    Add a Caregiver Hero will alert you when it’s time to take your medication, but it’s also good to have a designated Caregiver just in case. Note : The following is part of first-time use. To learn more about who caregivers are and what they can and cannot do, see the Caregivers chapter.

    Keep your empty pill bottles on hand in case you need to refer to them later. 1. Hero will let you know it’s preparing to have you load your first medication. Select OK . 2. Hero’s cartridge door will open. Remove cartridge 1 by grasping the bottom, slightly pinching with thumb and forefinger, and pulling out.
  • Page 24 3. Load your first medication into cartridge 1. Hero’s screen will display the name of the medication you should be loading. Be sure not to fill the cartridge higher than the MAX CONTENTS line.

    Note: If there is a label on cartridge 1 that says “Pinch & Pull,” remove it before returning the cartridge to slot 1. 5. Close the cartridge door. If you have additional medications to load, Hero will guide you through loading each one. Read previous steps 1-5 to follow along.
  • Page 26 ● Dispensed . Regimens that were dispensed on time are listed next to a green circle with a checkmark. ● Reported . Medication saved in a schedule but that is stored outside Hero is listed as Reported when you positively respond to Hero’s prompt asking you if you took it.

    If you do not dispense early, then at the scheduled dose time, Hero will play a chime and display a reminder that it is time to dispense your medication. In either case: 1.

    See Dispense a Missed/Skipped Dose. Dispense a Missed/Skipped Dose Hero allows you to dispense a missed or skipped dose up to four hours after the dose was originally scheduled to be dispensed. 1. On Hero, select any button.
  • Page 29 4. Select the medication you want to dispense. Note: If you have reached your max dose limit for this medication, Hero will not allow you to dispense. 5. Select the number of pills you want to dispense. You will be limited by this medication’s max dose limit.
  • Page 30 Note: When you dispense a scheduled dose ahead of the scheduled time, Hero will not remind you to dispense it at the actual scheduled time. However, the Hero app will send you a notification at the scheduled time to remind you to take that dose.

    Set Hero Notification Preferences 1. In the Hero app, select More > Your Settings > Reminders on Hero . 2. Use the + and - buttons to select how often Hero should alert you to take your scheduled dose. 3. Use the plus and minus buttons to select how many alerts Hero should give for a scheduled dose.

    3. If Phone Call is selected, enter the phone number you want to be reached on and select Send verification code . 4. To confirm, Hero will call that number and read off a four-digit code. Back on the app, enter the verification code and select Verify phone number .

    Note : You also have the option of receiving notifications via SMS by setting your preferences once logged in on the Hero website. Manage Medications You can view/edit, add, and remove medications from your account and from Hero at any time. Additionally, you can refill a medication once Hero has run out. View/Edit a Medication Select the Meds menu to view a list of all the medications in your account.

    When the medication was Last Refilled ● The number of pills Dispensed Since Refill ● Drug Information ● Notes ● Photos ● Medication History ● Passcode ● Amount Remaining Select this option to get a count or estimate of how many pills are remaining. If you entered an exact pill count, a number will be displayed here.

    Hero, and then re-add it with the new dose strength or expiration date. 5. For any changes you make to medications, such as max doses per day or amount remaining, select Update .

If you have the Drug Monitoring feature enabled, and if this new medication interacts with any existing medications, the app will display a warning. After reading about the possible interactions, select either Stop Adding Medication or Continue Adding Medication .

    9. Select Continue or Make Changes . 10. Select Confirm on Hero. 11. Select Okay on Hero. Hero will open its door to the next available cartridge. Remove the cartridge and fill it with the appropriate medication. Return the cartridge, making sure to push the bottom tab all the way in, until you hear a click sound.

    8. Empty any medication in the cartridge, clean the cartridge according to the instructions in chapter 18. Return the cartridge to the Hero device, making sure to push the bottom tab all the way in, until you hear a click sound. This will ensure the cartridge is securely and properly placed.

    Hero senses when a cartridge is empty and displays a message letting you know. 1. Once Hero detects that a cartridge is empty, it lets you Refill Now or Refill Later . You may refill later at any time, following the steps in the next section, but to refill now, continue to step 2.
  • Page 40: Refill When Medication Is Expired

    Refill When Medication is Expired When a medication is going to expire before your next dose, Hero will let you know. At that point, you will have the option to Refill Now or Refill Later . To Refill Now , select that option, and follow from step 2 in Refill When a Cartridge is Empty.

    Caregivers must have an iOS or Android smartphone. ● Add a Caregiver 1. In the Hero app, navigate to More > Your Settings > Manage Caregivers . 2. Select Invite Caregiver . 3. Select whether you want to Choose contact (from the contacts saved in your smartphone) or Add Manually .

    Note: Only active caregivers can be removed. The Caregiver Experience When a Hero user invites you to be a caregiver, you will receive an email notifying you. 1. Open the email on your smartphone. 2. Select Accept Invitation . If you don’t have the Hero app already installed, you will be prompted to install it.

Add the phone number of the Hero user for whom you are a caregiver by either typing in the phone number, or by selecting Choose Contact . This will allow you to quickly call the Hero user via a tap of a button when the user misses a scheduled dose.

    The Stats Menu The Stats menu in the Hero app displays data based on the last 30 days’ use of your Hero. The top of the screen tells you your overall adherence rate for the past 30 days. Below that, a graph will display your weekly adherence rate for the past four weeks as well as today’s...
  • Page 45 ● Late is defined as dispensing 1 hour or later than your scheduled regimen time. ● Missed is defined as ignoring a dispense prompt on Hero or actively skipping one or ● more scheduled doses that day. Extra is defined as any unscheduled dose.
  • Page 46: The More Menu (Account Settings)

    The More section of the Hero app contains settings and information about your account. Refer a Friend Hero users have the opportunity to refer up to five friends to Hero and receive a gift card in return. Share your invite code by tapping it to copy it to your phone’s clipboard, or by selecting Share with Friends and choosing any communication method you like (SMS, email, social media, etc.).

    Select Transfer Account to a New Hero to transfer your schedule and medication information to a new Hero. 1. Start up your new Hero and follow the setup instructions until your new Hero displays the connection code. 2. After selecting Transfer Account to a New Hero , select Begin Transfer .

    Device Log Select Device Log to view an audit trail of all events that occurred with Hero on any particular day. Events include the door opening and for what reason, Hero being offline, a dispense failure, and more. Select Calendar to see which days have logged events and to jump to any day in the calendar view.

    Meds > Select Medication > Passcode . Vacation Mode Use Vacation Mode if you’re planning on being away from your Hero device and need to stop Hero from expecting you to dispense during that time, as well as retrieving the necessary medication for your trip.

    12. Repeat step 11 for as many medications as necessary. While Hero is in Vacation Mode, the Vacation Mode menu in the app will allow you to export your schedule to a PDF. Select Details to see the details of your vacation.

    Hero Settings Use your Hero’s Device Settings menu to set the volume, change brightness, set the time, change your Wi-Fi network, and more. 1. On Hero, press any button. 2. Select Device Settings . Preferences The Preferences menu allows you to adjust the volume of notifications, the brightness of your Hero display, as well as the time zone.

    Note: Hero stores the information to networks it has previously connected to and will use that to help connect you to the web. Network Info Select Network Info to view the name of the Wi-Fi network Hero is connected to, its IP address, and its signal strength and type.
