    CHAPTER 2: Introduction 2. Introduction The USB to IDE Adapter is simple to use and light enough to take anywhere. If all of the internal IDE connections in your USB- equipped desktop or portable IBM compatible PC are occupied, you can use the Adapter to connect an external IDE storage device to the PC.
  • Page 11 At the time of this writing, the Adapter ships from the factory with a power supply for the attached device, a software CD-ROM, and this manual. (The package contents are, however, subject to change without notice.) Please contact Black Box if anything arrived damaged.

    CHAPTER 3: Software Installation 3. Software Installation The USB to IDE Adapter comes with a CD-ROM that contains an installer application (named “USB2IDEFW26.EXE” or something similar) and one or more documents. You can run the installer to unpack and install a couple pieces of software for use with the Adapter.

Select this drive in “My Computer.” Double- click on the installer application; it will run, and you’ll see the installation screens in Figures 3-1 through 3-3 below and on the following pages (keep clicking “Next”...

  • Page 19 USB TO IDE ADAPTER If at some later time you don’t want to use the Adapter with this computer, you can uninstall the software by first double-clicking “My Computer,” then “Control Panel,” then “Add/Remove Programs.” Select the Adapter’s driver in the window that appears.

    Attach a storage device to your Adapter, plug it into the USB port of your Windows 2000 computer, and reboot the computer, as described in Chapter 5. The Adapter should be autodetected and operate normally. If not, call Black Box Technical Support for assistance.

    USB TO IDE ADAPTER 5. Hardware Installation First attach the ATA/ATAPI compliant IDE or EIDE storage device you want to use to the USB to IDE Adapter’s 40-pin Berg connector. Plug the included power supply’s 4-pin Molex ® output connector into the device, then plug the power supply’s input cord into a working AC outlet.
  • Page 22 CHAPTER 5: Hardware Installation Once the computer has been rebooted, it should autodetect the Adapter’s attached storage device and should be able to communicate with it normally. A “USB2IDE Bulk Storage” entry should be generated in the Windows Device Manager and a “Removable Storage”...

    PC and the attached storage device for as long as you keep the Adapter connected to the PC, and should be regularly autodetected by the PC whenever it is disconnected and reconnected. If not, contact Black Box as described in Section 6.1.

    If your USB to IDE Adapter seems to be malfunctioning, do not attempt to alter or repair it. It contains no user-serviceable parts. Call Black Box Technical Support at 724-746-5500; the problem might be solvable over the phone. Before you call, make a record of the history of the problem.

    • Package it carefully. We recommend that you use the original container. • If the shipping is return- or repair-related, include everything you received with the Adapter when you pack it. Contact Black Box to get a Return Authorization (RA) number.
