Tester for diagnostics of alternator stator windings and diode bridges (24 pages)
Summary of Contents for Motoplat VC-014DS
Page 1
The Motoplat VC-014DS parts tester combines two devices: a stator winding tester and a rectifier tester. Once the stator is connected, the VC-014DS only take a few seconds to identify the phase connections and then checks the windings for any short circuits or connection failures.

Motoplat ® Section 2 – Specifications and Installation 2.0 Technical specifications: General Supply voltage (V) 100-250 Supply frequency (Hz) 50/60 Supply type Single-phase Maximum consuming power (W) Dimensions (MM) 219*214*80 Weight (KG) Stator winding test Voltage (V) 12/24 Types ‘Star’, ‘delta’...
Motoplat ® 2.1 Back panel: Description Cable connection Fuse (2A) Plug the supplied power cable into the 12V socket of the tester (1). Check if the fuse is tightened proparly. If the fuse need to be replaced, turn it counter clock wise to remove it from the tester.
Motoplat ® Section 3 – Alternator Stator Test 3.0 General information: A stator is a fixed element of an alternator that consists of a magnetically conductive core with circular mounted coil windings. By rotating the stator, the rotor generates alternating current. The frequency...

Motoplat ® Phase windings can be connected in a ‘delta’ or ‘star’ diagram. The windings are placed into a frame of steel slots (stator core) to conduct magnetic current from the rotor to the stator windings directly and to reduce area dispersion of the magnetic field.
Motoplat ® 3.1 Common failures: Inter-turn fault (single-phase short circuit): Alternator overload – When the alternator current exceeds the limit, the stator windings can be overheated and this can cause damage to the winding insulation. Short circuit due to mechanical damage of the stator.
Motoplat ® 3.2 Scan: Start the tester by pressing the power button and select ‘STATOR’ Connect the test leads with the alligator clips to the phases of the stator. It doesn’t matter which phase is connected to which connection port, as the tester detects the connected windings automatically.
Motoplat ® 3.3 Test: After the connections are detected, you can start the stator test. Place the test pen againt the stator core. Press on ‘Test’ at the right side of the screen. Press on ‘Test’ at the right side of the screen.

Motoplat ® Rejected (Example) The notification ‘short’ appears on the display and the tester makes a repeating sound. There is a 1% difference between the phases which corresponds to the acceptable limit of 10%. This means the winding insulation of phases 5-6 is broken and causes short circuited.
Motoplat ® Section 4 – Alternator Rectifier Test 4.0 General information: A rectifier block on three parallel half-bridges with six semiconductor diodes, converts three-phase alternating current of the stator into direct current at the output of the alternator. A common diagram of rectifier on three parallel half-...
Motoplat ® 4.2 Test The VC-014DS tests the 2 way conduction of rectifiers, connected through measuring cables. The tests are conducted by current pulsations. Increased resistance (semiconductor degeneracy) or non-conducting diode(s) are indicated as open circuit on the display. If possible, the tester restores the rectifier connections В+, В- and connection terminals of the stator windings upon finishing the measurement.

Disconnected cables must be isolated from each other. Press the test button. The VC-014DS tests the connected rectifier and shows the results on the screen. Passed (Example) The test results of a well-functioning three-armed rectifier are shown on the right.
Page 16
Motoplat ® Rejected: Open Circuit (Example) The test results of a rejected three-armed rectifier are shown on the right. The diodes with an open ‘B+’ circuit are shown in the field ‘open circuit’. Rejected: Open Circuit (Example) The test results of a rejected three-armed rectifier are shown on the right.
