1. GENERAL
This chapter describes those units and components which direct the engine exhaust gases overboard.
The exhaust system carries engine exhaust gasses directly from the engine exhaust ports to outside the
cowling on the underside of the fuselage. The system is a tuned design, meaning each of the six headers
are the same size and the overall length sized to provide optimum scavenging which results in maximum
horsepower and engine durability. All exhaust gas components are fabricated from stainless steel and
stainless hardware is used in all areas subject to high heat.
Serials 0002 thru 0319: The engine exhaust system consists of exhaust headers, Y-pipe collector, mid-
pipe, heat exchanger, tailpipe, and associated slip joints, ball joints, and fasteners. Each engine cylinder is
equipped with an exhaust pipe leading down below the engine, where the exhaust pipe joins with others at
the Y-pipe collector. From the collector, a mid-pipe directs the exhaust gases forward and to the RH side to
join the heat exchanger and tailpipe. Ball joints are employed to allow movement due to heat expansion
and normal operating loads at the tailpipe/heat exchanger and heat exchanger/mid-pipe connections.
Serials 0320 & subs: The engine exhaust system consists of exhaust headers, collector weldments, heat
exchanger, muffler, tailpipes, and associated slip joints, ball joints, butt joints, and fasteners. Each engine
cylinder is equipped with an exhaust pipe leading down and alongside of the engine, where the exhaust
pipe joins with others at the collector weldment to form the exhaust header assembly. The RH header
assembly is attached to a heat exchanger and tailpipe. The LH header assembly is attached to a muffler
and tailpipe. Ball joints are employed to allow movement due to heat expansion and normal operating
loads at the heat exchanger/collector and muffler/collector connections. Butt joints with clamps and
sleeves are employed at the tailpipe/heat exchanger and tailpipe/muffler connections.
