Overview of ZoomAir Wireless Networking ZoomAir wireless products allow you to build a wireless network in your home or small office. This manual covers the ZoomAir USB Client Model 4115. You can use the USB Client alone as the locus of a small wireless network, or you can use it with either an Internet Gateway such as the ZoomAir IG- 4150 or an Access Point such as the ZoomAir AP11.

ZoomAir Network Topologies You can use your USB Client in three types of ZoomAir network topologies and thus create a network that is partially or fully wireless.

Peer-to-Peer Workgroup In this network scenario, each computer equipped with a wireless Client is part of a small wireless workgroup where participants can exchange files and printers as supported by Microsoft Networking. You can use this scenario to set up a temporary “Peer-to-Peer” network in environments where no access points are available (for example, in SOHO environments), as long as the stations are within range of one another.

Click Install ZoomAir Software. Note: If the CD does not start automatically, from your desktop navigate to the CD-ROM drive and double-click the icon for the CD-ROM drive. 2 2 2 2 When the following menu appears, click Install 4115 USB Client Driver Files.
Connecting the USB Client to Your Computer After you restart your computer, plug one end of the supplied USB cable into a free USB port on your computer and plug the other end into the USB Client. CAUTION: Multiple USB-compatible devices can share one USB port through the use of a hub or splitter cables.
Note to Windows 2000 Users: You may see a dialog box stating Digital Signature Not Found. You can safely click Yes and continue with the installation. Configuring the USB Client You can configure your USB Client in one of three ways, depending on your network environment.

For more on network security, refer to the accompanying WEP Booklet. Below we provide more detail on the three possible configuration profiles. Gateway Connection If you are using your USB Client with an Internet Gateway such as the ZoomAir IG-4150, Residential Gateway should be highlighted in Add/Edit Configuration Profile dialog box as shown below.

The Edit Configuration [Default] dialog box opens. For Network Name, enter the ID number of your IG-4150 (the six-digit number on the bottom label of the unit). As you type the Network Name, the last five characters of that string automatically appear in the Encryption Key text box.

Access Point Connection If you are using your USB Client with an Access Point such as the AP11, Access Point should be highlighted in the Add/Edit Configuration Profile dialog box as shown below. Click the Edit Profile button, and type the name of the Access Point (for example, MyLan).

Turn to page 17 to continue the installation. Workgroup Computing (Peer-to-Peer) Connection Please recall that a Peer-to-Peer network doesn’t include a wireless Gateway or Access Point. If you are connecting your USB Client to a Peer-to-Peer network, Peer-to-Peer should be highlighted in the Add/Edit Configuration Profile dialog box.

Click OK to confirm your entry and return to the Add/Edit Configuration Profile. Click OK again to proceed with the connection. The Next Step When you have finished configuring the network connection profile, you will see the following message: Client Manager is not installed.
Installing the Client Manager Software 1 1 1 1 From your desktop, locate the ZoomAir CD and run it: Double-click My Computer and the CD-ROM drive. 2 2 2 2 In the ZoomAir main menu, click the Install ZoomAir Software button. The ZoomAir Software screen opens. Click Install 4115 USB Client Manager, and follow the prompts to install the Client Manager utility.

Note: Don’t check the box I’d like to start the Client Manager. Once you have installed the Client Manager and restarted your computer, the Client Manager icon will appear in the taskbar: To access the Client Manager, double-click this icon. Note: If you don’t want to restart your computer, you can also activate the Client Manager by clicking Start | Programs | Orinoco| Client Manager from the desktop.
Setting the Windows Network Properties If this is the first time that network support is installed onto your computer, the Network dialog box (shown below) will automatically open. If network support is already installed, you do not need to read these instructions.
Verifying the Installation If you want to verify that your installation was successful, check the USB Client’s LEDs. • A steady green Power LED indicates that the USB Client is connected to your computer. • A flickering green Transmit/Receive LED indicates wireless activity.
Using Your ZoomAir USB Client This chapter provides general information about: • Using your USB Client Viewing Other Computers • • Using the Client Manager • Modifying Client Settings • Removing Your USB Client Finding More Information. • Use and Maintenance Tips The built-in radio and antennas in your ZoomAir USB Client perform best in an open environment with as few obstacles as possible.
To display other workgroups in the network environment, double-click the Entire Network icon. If there is a second network operating system running in your network environment (for example, a Novell NetWare network), the Entire Network window will also display available servers running under the second network operating system.
To retrieve a more detailed status overview, left-click the Client Manger icon in the taskbar. To display a menu with more options, right-click the icon. Viewing Wireless Link Quality A table of possible icons appears below. When the Client Manager icon is not indicating excellent or good radio connection, perform the recommended action.

From the menu, select Configuration Profile: • Select Add/Edit Profile to add a new profile or to modify an existing profile • Select One of the existing profiles (if present) to select one of the defined profiles without viewing or modifying the settings.
Upgrading or Removing the USB Client You may want to upgrade or remove your ZoomAir USB Client and Driver in one of the following situations: • You would like to use new features that have become available for your USB Client. •...

In the top section of the Device Manager tab, select the option View devices by type. Then, in the list of PC Devices, double-click Network Adapters. Select the item ZoomAir USB Client and click the Properties button. In the ZoomAir USB Client Properties window, select the Driver tab.
On your desktop, click Start | Settings | Control Panel. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, under Install/Uninstall, select the USB Client, and click Add/Remove. Follow the prompts. Shut down your computer and unplug the USB Client from the computer.
Advanced Configurations Your ZoomAir USB Client will work in most network environments with the Basic Settings enabled as described previously. NOTE: Encryption needs to be the same for all ZoomAir stations or any other 802.11b wireless station that may be on your network. You can identify four different key values to decrypt wireless data and select one of these keys to encrypt wireless data transmissions. Note: The default WEP key values are calculated automatically from the passphrase/network name.

If You Cannot Connect to the Network If your USB Client seems to be working fine, but you are unable to connect to the network, it may be due to a configuration mismatch. For example, if both of the USB Client’s LEDs blink once every 10 seconds, it is likely a configuration mismatch pertaining to either the Network Name (this value is case-sensitive) or the WEP key.
