Open plastic fire (TF4)
Optical detectors do not react very effectively to this acceptance test fire. The
customer experiences a large fire and a late reaction of the smoke detectors.
-> This acceptance test fire should not be used for testing detectors which only
respond to smoke.
Open liquid fire (TF6)
Open liquid fires are dangerous and may only be lit by well trained and qualified
personnel. -> This acceptance test fire should only be selected if all others are
unsuitable.
Acceptance test fires should be principally be located on the floor of a room
beneath a detector or at another place which is suitable to trigger a speedy fire
detector response.
This location must be at a sufficiently safe distance from heat-sensitive or easily
combustible materials.
The following criterion frequently determines the success or failure of a test:
The smoke or heat must reach the detector!
When selecting the location of the acceptance test fire it is therefore important to
take the ambient conditions such as the ceiling construction (e.g. joists) and the air
circulation in the room into account.
Acceptance test fires may only be carried out if:
The system or building owner agrees to the execution of the test.
Any risk of fire to the immediate vicinity can be excluded.
Slight soiling from the smoke is accepted and the room can be ventilated.
Suitable extinguishing equipment is to hand.
No automatic extinguishing systems (including those in adjacent rooms) can be
triggered unintentionally.
In order to prevent smoke poisoning do not expose personnel unnecessarily to the
smoke.
Symptoms of smoke poisoning:
Burning eyes, headache, dizziness, shortage of breath or palpitations during or
after the fire test are early symptoms of smoke poisoning. If such symptoms occur
always leave the room immediately and call a doctor if these do not abate within 10
minutes.
