Disk Array and Fault Tolerance Methods 6.1 Overview of Disk Array 6.1.1 Physical Disk The capacity and performance of a single physical disk is sufficient for home users. However, enterprise users need more storage capacity, higher data transfer rate, and more effective protection against data loss in the event of a disk failure.

图6-2 All read/write heads of physical disks being active at the same time 6.1.3 Data Striping Data striping refers to the method of splitting continuous data into smaller pieces of the same size 图 and writing them to different disks. As shown in 6-3, each data unit is called a data block (indicated by Bn in the figure), and several adjacent data blocks form a strip (indicated by Sn in the figure) and are distributed in all physical disks that form the logical disk.
  • Page 130: Disk Array

To ensure that the data in the logical disk is readable, the order of the data blocks in each data strip must be the same. In this sorting process performed by a RAID card, data blocks are sent to disk write heads in the correct order.

    2. Advantages of RAID 1 • RAID 1 features the highest security among all RAIDs. • As long as there is not a complete failure of the disks in the mirror pair, the data will not be lost. • The disks can still function even up to half of the physical disks in the array are faulty. 3.
  • Page 134: Raid 60

    • The available disk capacity of RAID 5 is larger than that of RAID 10 because the parity information only requires storage space equal to one physical disk. 3. Disadvantages of RAID 5 • The data write performance is relatively low. •...
