13.0 Troubleshooting PM2014 Lathe

Trouble
Motor fails to develop
full power.
Motor or spindle stalls
or will not start.
Excessive vibration.
Lathe runs at one
speed only.
Tools tend to grab or
dig in.
Headstock moves
when applying
pressure with
Tailstock.
Tailstock moves when
applying pressure.
LED display does not
work.
Spindle has slight
wobble (runout)
Probable Cause
Power supply line overloaded.
Undersized wires in power supply
system.
Inverter fault (display reads "Err").
Motor fault.
Excessive cut.
Improper belt adjustment, or worn or
broken belt.
Improper cooling of motor.
Worn spindle bearing(s).
Motor fault.
Workpiece warped, out of round, has
major flaw, or was improperly prepared
for turning.
Motor mount lock handle is loose.
Lathe on uneven surface.
Worn spindle bearing(s).
Improper belt adjustment, or worn belt.
Potentiometer (speed dial) fault.
Electronic AC inverter is not
programmed properly, or is defective, or
there is loose wiring.
Dull tools.
Tool support set too low.
Tool support set too far from workpiece.
Improper tool being used.
Headstock not locked to bed.
Excessive pressure being applied by
tailstock (more than 500 lbs. of force).
Locking handle not tightened.
Cam lock nut needs adjusting.
Lathe bed and tailstock mating surfaces
are greasy or oily.
Digital sensor out of position or
damaged.
Bearings are worn or damaged.
Spindle is damaged.
Remedy
Correct overload condition.
Increase supply wire size.

Have motor inspected and replaced.
Reduce depth of cut.
Adjust or replace belt as needed.
Blow out sawdust from motor housing
fan.
Replace bearing(s).
Have motor inspected and replaced.
Correct problem by planing or sawing
workpiece, or discard entirely and use
new workpiece.
Tighten lock handle.
Mount lathe to level, flat surface. Adjust
levelers if using stand.
Replace bearing(s).
Adjust or replace belt.
Replace potentiometer.

Keep tools sharp.
Reposition tool support height.
Reposition tool support closer to
workpiece.
Use correct tool for operation.
Tighten headstock locking handle.
Slide headstock to left end, then apply
pressure to workpiece with tailstock.
Apply only sufficient force with tailstock
to hold workpiece securely in place.
Tighten locking handle.
Turn tailstock over and tighten cam lock
nut.
Remove tailstock and clean surfaces
with a cleaner/degreaser. Re-apply light
coat of oil to bed surface.
Open belt access door and inspect
sensor. Reposition or replace.
Replace bearings.
Replace spindle.
