The benefit of using a SIP server to connect is that any device can be ‘discovered’ via its SIP server registration. This is particularly useful if a codec is being used in multiple locations with IP addresses that are DHCP assigned. These DHCP addresses are unreliable and are not recommended for live broadcast connections.

What is a SIP URI? SIP URIs can be used to whitelist or blacklist devices from connecting to a codec. A SIP URI is the address or characters used to call another person via SIP. A SIP URI is essentially a user's 'contact address' and is used by VoIP phones and other devices to call using SIP.
