diagram), the other to the shoulder ring (B in the diagram). With this arrangement, you
can steer the chest with your right hand, slow down or brake on the shoulder blades with
your left. The Halti Harness is designed to be linked to your dog's normal wide flat collar
and to slide or "give" from side to side due to the double-ring arrangement at 'A'. Flip the
lead from left to right to vary the direction of pull and to re-centre the slide on the chest
strap. Ensure that the collar is appropriately sized, neither too tight nor too slack. Do not
use in combination with a choke chain, nor even a "half choke" collar design.
The Halti Harness system can be used as a passive training device, without any particular
application of skill. However, I recommend that you become more actively engaged with
your dog's movement and with his behaviour. For instance, by pulling the lead attached
to the chest ring A4 over his right shoulder, you are naturally steering your dog to turn
left: so link this manoeuvre to a "left" command. Similarly, by laying the lead over his left
shoulder and pulling it towards you (if you are walking on the dog's right, your left), you
are steering him towards you and to the right: command "right".
Just as the well trained horse will stop on the "Whoaaa!" command, so your dog will
easily learn the "steady" or "stop" response. For that, simply lift the lead on his chest
ring 'A4', and he has to stop. All such manoeuvres should be commanded by a soft,
consistent tone of voice and language.
If you have conducted these exercises effectively, you may soon find that you no
longer need to control your dog from the forward or chest ring A4. You can revert to
the shoulder ring B alone, and rely just upon vocal commands and/or hand signals.
Remember, harnesses will always be more comfortable and safer than any other restraint
system and with this patented design, the harness can be worn all day, every day. There
are no pressure or rubbing points to cause discomfort around the neck or under his legs,
as can occur with some other designs of harness.
