Fitting And Adjustment - HALTI Harness Training Manual

Fitting and adjustment of the Halti Training Harness
There are three points of adjustment to the harness, enabling it to fit every shape, height
or weight of dog. The concept and shape of the harness is really simple, but the first
fitting is crucial and may take a few minutes. It must be thoughtfully adjusted, tested and
readjusted until it meets the key criteria which are outlined in the anatomical drawings at
the front of this book.
Ring A3 sits midline on your dog's breastplate or sternum. This is the bony protuberance
at the top of his ribcage. The buckles A1 and A2 should be symmetrically positioned to
ensure that Ring A3 is naturally positioned on his midline. However, note that the patented
'high-friction' slide action of the double ring allows movement of A3 between the two
buckles. If necessary, the buckles can be locked into position with a stitch.
Ring B (on the red backstrap) should rest over the backbone, by adjusting buckles B1
and B2 to the same lengths. As a rough guide, Ring B should lie just behind the dog's
shoulders.
Finally, the belly strap C should be adjusted so as to be snug but not tight: the 2-3 finger
rule applies here, the same as for fitting collars on a dog's neck.
Attach the trigger hook D to your dog's normal, flat-collar
D-ring.
Overall adjustment
The three adjustment points can now be used to give a comfortable fit of the Halti
harness on your dog, taking into account his particular anatomy. The objective is to
have the red back and belly straps lie in a straight band behind his "elbow" (base of the
humerus bone). If the black chest straps are too short they will tend to pull the red belly
and back strap onto your dog's legs, potentially causing him discomfort.
Linkage of the Halti Harness to the dog's flat collar is important because it positions the
breast strap and its ring A3 over the sternum.
Spend a little time watching your dog walking, running and jumping in his Halti Harness,
seeing that there is no restriction of movement.
The Halti Harness is designed to steer a dog from his chest, placing pressure or a "push"
opposite to the direction in which you are pulling the lead. The benefit of a properly used
Halti Harness is that it gives total control over the dog's shoulders and thus sets the
direction in which he can move.
There are several options on how the Halti Harness can be employed. Most simple is
to attach one end of the double-ended Halti Training Lead to the chest ring (A4 in the
