The Universal Motorised Stage (UMS) is a motorised translation stage for moving microscopes in X and Y. The UMS provides 50 mm of travel in X and Y with 20 nm electronic resolution. Due to its large load carrying capacity the microscope stage can be used with almost any Zeiss, Leica, Nikon or Olympus inverted or upright microscopes;...
Note: The design of the top plate of the UMS will differ depending on the microscope that will be mounted on it. When used with Scientifica’s Slicescope the UMS is a simple rectangle shape, when used with other manufacturer’s microscope such as Olympus or Nikon it will feature a “winged” top plate to accommodate the footprint of the microscope (See figure A).

The UMS is fixed to an anti-vibration table using the mounting holes in its lower section, marked ‘A’ and ‘B’ in Figure C. The UMS is attached to the anti-vibration table using either ¼ x 20 or M6 x 12 screws, depending on the thread of the table.
The UMS is compatible with microscopes from all major manufacturers. The majority of these will bolt directly down onto the UMS stage from above. A variety of hole patterns are featured on the top plate to accommodate the requirements of these microscopes.
As an example in the case of a Zeiss FS2 microscope the following steps must be carried out: 1. Remove the top plate from the motorised stage of the UMS by unscrewing the 6 x M6 screws securing it in place.
1. Remove the microscope drive belt cover and fine focus band (the slimmer, orange band in the right-hand picture below) 2. Place the Z focus module on the top plate of the UMS, aligning it with the Z module’s mounting holes. Please review section 7.0 for further assistance in identifying these.
Power on the system using the on/off switch on the front of the 1U rack controller. 4.2 Operating the UMS For operation of the UMS/XY Stage using a User Interface Controller, such as the Control Cube or PatchPad Display, please see the relevant user manual.
Mains power must be disconnected by switching off the mains power supply outlet and disconnecting the mains power supply cable. Compressed air can be used to remove dust from the top of the UMS/XY Stage. Care must be taken to prevent dust entering the unit during the process.
Ensure that the speed toggle switch is set to fast mode (and that a suitable speed has been set in the LinLab software) and that the approach toggle switch is set to the O position Check all cables and connectors for damage or loose connections 7.0 Specifications Supply voltage range Supply frequency...
