Sewing Machines and Costs
There will be no cost for the use of the machine or thread that is provided by the Library. The following costs
will apply to maintenance and loss of materials:

Universal needle

Patrons are encouraged to bring in their own needles for use in the machines, but a single Universal needle will
be available and in the machine for use. If the needle breaks, while you are using the machine, the library will
provide a second needle at no cost.
If the needle should break again, we will provide a replacement at a cost of $1.00

Bobbins

Metal (Bernina)– $1.50
Plastic (Singer) - $ .50

  • Page 2 Using the Bernina Although it may look complicated, the Bernina sewing machine is relatively easy to use. Even if you have never used a sew machine before, you can use this machine with a few basic instructions. To get started you will need some basic understanding of what the parts of the machine are and how they are used together.

  • Page 4 Located on the side of the machine is the on / off switch. There are 3 settings, (0) OFF; (1) ON; (1+lightbulb icon) ON with the machine light. The machine will have full power on setting (1). At the top of the machine is the stitch menu and selector.

  • Page 6 Raise the needle (1) by turning the balance wheel on the side of the machine. Raise the presser foot (2), by lifting the presser foot lever which is located on the back of the machine. Open the hinged front cover on the free arm. Hold the bobbin case by the latch with the index finger and thumb of the left hand.
