Printhead Replacement

The removal and replacement of the printhead is not complex, however, the instructions are lengthy and
need to be followed closely. In addition, several tedious adjustments need to be completed after installing
the part.
The most common problems with this part replacement are caused by failure to follow instructions. This
may result in damage to the printhead, misalignment of the color planes or wasted time readjusting the
printhead.
The main steps involved in replacing the printhead include:
Printhead Verification – check to see if the printhead is the failing part before installing it.
Installation of the new Printhead – a rough positional adjustment of the new part in the
printer.
Course Mechanical Registration – a rough mechanical alignment of the printhead by
turning an adjustment screw.
Dual Diode Alignment – adjusts the positioning of the laser beam at three fixed points
across the scan line. This adjustment corrects Linearity Errors and tunes the beam to its
ideal location. There are no linearity adjustments for the K plane. Each adjustment value
has a range of -32 to +32. All integers within this range can be selected as the input. The
actual physical amount of adjustment is ¼ of a 600 dpi pel for each increment, which is 10.6
µm.
Registration – electronically aligns the Black plane to the printer.
Color Alignment – electronically adjusts printhead skew and aligns the C, M, Y planes to the
K plane.
**When reinstalling the printhead, be careful as you route the printhead ribbon cables through the slotted
opening in the rear of the printer. These cables can be switched by accident resulting in damage to the
System Board or Printhead causing a "Close Side Door" message followed by a "110.08 Printhead error"
message (or other printhead error).
