techniques used to find current drains, even though
the symptoms are different.
On newer vehicles after the introduction of electronic
ignition and computer control systems the parasitic
load can be as high as 100mA. You will need to check
the manufacturer's specifications for the acceptable
level of parasitic load.
This test checks for excessive parasitic drain on the
battery.
To measure parasitic load:
- Turn the ignition switch and all accessories off.
- Set the rotary switch to Amps (
- Disconnect the battery negative (-) cable.
Insert:
- Black lead into COM jack
- Red lead into A jack.
Connect:
- Black test probe to the disconnected negative (-)
- Red test probe to the negative (-) battery post.
Set:
- RECORD (MAX-MIN-AVG) function on the Meter.
Parasitic draw should not exceed 100mA.
If there is an excessive parasitic draw, remove the
circuit fuses from fuse box, one at a time, until the
excessive draw is located. Also check the non-fused
applications such as headlights, computer relays and
).
capacitors in the on-board instrument panel.
4. Voltage Load Test
Batteries are often blamed for "No Start" conditions,
when in fact the real problem exists in the charging
system. After the charging system problem exists for a
period of time, the battery will discharged and it will
not be able to supply enough current for the starter
to crank the engine.
This test checks for the battery's capacity to deliver
sufficient cranking voltage.
To measure voltage load:
- Set the rotary switch to voltage ( ).
Connect:
- Black lead to the negative (-) battery post.
- Red lead to the positive (+) battery post.
Set:
- RECORD ( MAX - MIN - AVG) function on the Meter.
Crank the engine for 15 seconds after disabling the
ignition and check the minimum display.
battery cable terminal.
NOTE: Many vehicle computers draw 10mA or more
continuously.
WARNING: DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OR TURN
ON ACCESSORIES THAT WILL DRAIN MORE THAN 10A
COMBINED, SINCE YOU COULD DAMAGE THE METER OR
INJURE YOURSELF. TO PERFORM THIS TEST YOU WILL NEED
TO CONNECT THE METER IN SERIES WITH THE BATTERY
USING THE CURRENT FUNCTION ON THE AMPS (A OR MA)
RANGE.
