Die 575 PS starken und 45 km/h schnellen Tenderlokomotiven
der BR 80 waren für den Verschiebedienst in mehreren großen
Personenbahnhöfen vorgesehen. Die Deutsche Reichsbahn-
Gesellschaft (DRG) beschaffte von 1927 bis 1929 insgesamt
39 Exemplare dieses Dreikupplers. Diese Baureihe gehört
damit zu den ersten Lok-Typen, die nach den Vereinheitlich-
tungsgrundsätzen der Reichsbahn gebaut worden sind.
1945, nach Kriegsende, verblieben bei der DR 21 Maschinen
und bei der Deutschen Bundesbahn 17. Die Lokomotiven der
DR waren bis 1962/1963 in Leipzig im Einsatz. Bei der Deut-
schen Bundesbahn wurden die letzten drei Lokomotiven 1965
beim BW Schweinfurt ausgemustert.
Mehrere Loks wurden an Industriebetriebe verkauft, sieben
Exemplare sind als Museums- und Denkmals-Loks erhalten
geblieben.

Information about the Prototype
The class 80 tank locomotives had an output of 575 horse-
power and a maximum speed of 45 km/h (28.13 m.p.h.),
and were planned for switching service in several large
passenger stations. The German State Railroad Company
(DRG) purchased all total 39 units of these coupled, three-axle
locomotives from 1927 to 1929. The class was part of the first
types of locomotives built according to the State Railroad's
standardization priniciples.
In 1945, after the end of the war, there were 21 units with
the DR in former East Germany and 17 with the DB. The DR's
locomotives were in service until 1962/63 at Leipzig. The
last 3 units for the DB were retired from service in 1965 at
Schweinfurt.
Several units were sold to private parties for industrial
switching service, and seven locomotives remain preserved as
museum and memorial locomotives.
