    OTDR Basic Principles OTDR Basic Principles An OTDR sends short pulses of light into a fiber. Light scattering occurs in the fiber due to discontinuities such as connectors, splices, bends, and faults. An OTDR then detects and analyzes the backscattered signals. The signal strength is measured for specific intervals of time and is used to characterize events.

It verifies the injection level and the reflectance of the first connector. It displays a message when a unusually high loss or reflectance occur at the first connection.

    Setting Analysis Parameters Setting Analysis Parameters To define the actual fiber span start, you can set the launch fiber length. When you perform tests with your unit, you connect a launch fiber between your unit and the fiber under test. This is why, by default, the fiber span includes the launch fiber.

Your unit can locate macrobends by comparing the loss values measured at a certain location, for a certain wavelength (for example, 1310 nm) with the loss values measured at the corresponding location, but for a greater wavelength (for example, 1550 nm).

Manual (advanced): offers all the tools you need to perform complete OTDR tests and measurements manually and gives you control over all test parameters.
