The CG834WG Gateway connects to your LAN using either its twisted-pair Ethernet, USB or 802.11b or 802.11g wireless port. To use the CG834WG Gateway on your network, each computer must have either an installed Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC), USB Host port or 802.11b or 802.11g wireless adapter. If the computer will connect to your network at 100 Mbps, you must use a Category 5 (CAT5) cable such as the one provided with your gateway.

For a USB connection, connect the USB cable to the USB port on your modem and to a USB port on your computer. d. Connect the power adapter to the CG834WG, and plug it into an outlet. e. Turn on your computer. If software usually logs you in to your Internet connection, do not run that software or cancel it if it starts automatically.

WAN Primary and Secondary DNS: A DNS server is a host on the Internet that translates Internet names (such as www.netgear.com) to numeric IP addresses. Typically your ISP transfers the IP address of one or two DNS servers to your gateway during login.
Chapter 2 Wireless Configuration This chapter describes how to configure the wireless features of your CG834WG Gateway. In planning your wireless network, you should consider the level of security required. You should also select the physical placement of your firewall in order to maximize the network speed.
Wireless Cable Modem Gateway CG834WG User Manual Wireless Placement and Range Guidelines The range of your wireless connection can vary significantly based on the physical placement of the gateway. The latency, data throughput performance, and notebook power consumption of wireless adapters also vary depending on your configuration choices.
Regulatory Domain correctly as the first step. • SSID. The Service Set Identification (SSID) identifies the wireless local area network. NETGEAR is the default SSID. However, you may customize it by using up to 32 alphanumeric characters. Wireless Settings Settings Description Wireless Network Name (SSID) The SSID is also known as the wireless network name. Enter a 32-character (maximum) name in this field.
You can restrict access to only trusted PCs so that unknown PCs cannot wirelessly connect to the CG834WG Gateway. MAC address filtering adds an obstacle against unwanted access to your network, but the data broadcast over the wireless link is fully exposed.

Note: If you are configuring the gateway from a wireless computer, make sure to add your computer’s MAC address to the Access List.

Chapter 3 Content Filtering and Firewall Rules This chapter describes how to use Content Filtering and Firewall Rules for the CG834WG Gateway to protect your network. Note: You must log in as a parent (superuser) in order to access content filtering features.

Note: The user name and password are not the same as any user name or password your might use to log in to your Internet connection. NETGEAR recommends that you change this password to a more secure password. The ideal password should contain no dictionary words from any language, and should be a mixture of both upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols.

MAC Filtering By default, any PC that can connect to your gateway has Internet access. You can use MAC filtering to block Internet access for specific PCs based on their MAC addresses.
