    TO ENSURE SAFE MACHINE OPERATION Overview 1.1.1 Instruction Manuals Each machine is shipped with a variety of built-in safety devices. However, careless handling of the machine can cause serious accidents. To prevent the occurrence of such accidents, all programmers and other personnel that deal with the machine must carefully read the manuals supplied by the NC unit manufacturer, and equipment manufacturers, before attempting to operate, maintain, or program the machine.
  • Page 4 Power Supply No electrical noise generating sources, such as electric welders or electric discharge machines, can be near the machine. Take care to isolate the machine from any adverse effects that might be caused by nearby equipment. An excessive voltage drop due to an insufficient power capacity will cause a malfunction of the NC unit.

    1.1.3 Turning ON the Power After Installation Before Turning ON the Power After completing the machine installation, check the following points before turning on the power. Make sure that all bolts are tightened securely. Make sure that all connectors are connected properly. Make sure that all hoses and air pipes are connected properly.

    1.2 Caution Labels Important information is written on caution labels which are attached to the machine at locations where they can be easily seen. Caution labels contain critical information which must be strictly observed by all operators; failure to observe the information can cause serious accidents. Caution labels are marked DANGER, WARNING, or CAUTION, depending upon the seriousness of the hazard.

    1.4 Specification Change and Modification Machine specifications are set to the optimum conditions before shipment. Never try to change the machine specifications without consulting your machine tool supplier. If only some of the specifications are changed, the other specifications will not match the change and unexpected results will be obtained. In the worst case, specification changes will result in adverse effects.

    DOOR INTERLOCK FUNCTION The door interlock function is developed to ensure the operator’s safety during machine operation. Before starting the machine operation, make sure that the door interlock function is valid. When the door interlock function is made valid, machine operation is enabled or disabled in response to the closing or opening of the machine door.

    WORKPIECE SETTING When using a manually tightened fixture, always remove the clamp handle or tightening tool from the fixture after tightening. When clamping a workpiece on the table or in the fixture, take note of the rigidity of the workpiece. Make sure that the workpiece will not be loosened or distorted due to the clamping force.

    MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION INSIDE THE ELECTRICAL CABINET Even when the main power switch (non - fused circuit breaker) on the electrical cabinet is turned OFF, parts of the cabinet may still have potential and may give an electric shock if accidentally touched. Before attempting maintenance and inspection inside the electrical cabinet, be sure to turn OFF the power at the circuit breaker for the entire plant.

    PRECAUTIONS ON MANUAL OPERATION AND SETUP The machine should normally be operated by one, well trained person only. In cases where more than one operator is essential, the operators must co- operate carefully, communicate as much as possible. If one operator presses buttons on the operation panel or feeds machine axes while another is replacing a workpiece, a fixture, or tool etc, that operator, or some one standing close-by, could be entangled in the machine and seriously injured.

    12.1 Safety Clothing Approved safety glasses and safety shoes should be used at all times when operating or in the vicinity of the machine. Never wear loose clothing whilst operating the machine as loose clothing may become entangled and you will be severely injured. Never operate the machine with long hair as long hair may become entangled and you will be severely injured, persons with long hair should use a hair net.

    CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE OPERATING THE MACHINE The cautions that must be constantly borne in mind when operating the machine are listed below. These cautions apply to all machine related work (operation, maintenance, inspection, programming etc) Never touch a switch, button, or key with wet hands. If it is not properly grounded or is leaking current, you could receive an electrical shock.

If you do not check your footing beforehand, you could loose your balance while working and injure yourself by putting your hand in a dangerous place while trying to find support, or by failing over.

    BLOCKED AXIS MOVEMENT To prevent the axes from being blocked the inside of the machines working area should be cleaned on a regular basis. If the axes movement becomes blocked by either swarf or a workpiece, the removal of the object should never be attempted whilst the machine power is If swarf has become entangled around the moving parts of the machine, it must be removed immediately to prevent possible damage.

    HAZARDOUS MATERIALS This Machining Centre is designed to machine non-hazardous metals only. Non-hazardous materials such as Tools Steels, Aluminum, and Brass may be machined. Machining materials such as graphite and resinous materials may be performed but in such cases a special Exhaust/Filter system must be fitted. Some materials produce flammable dusts when machined and particular care should be taken in these circumstances as the machine is not ATEX compliant and an explosion could occur.

    Warning Do not climb into the machine guard! You may become entrapped. Because of the compact size of the Bridgeport range of machining centres, and the provision of side access doors to allow swarf removal, it is not necessary to climb into the machine guard.
