,abeling a disk
Label
Purpose:
Creates, changes, or deletes the volume identification label on
a disk.
Syntax:
label
[drive:][ label)
Comments:
The volume label may be up to 11 characters in length and may
include spaces, but not tabs. Aside from tabs, you also should not
use the following characters in a volume label:
*?I\/.,;:+
=<>[)
If
you do not specify a volume label, label prompts you with the
following message:
Volume in drive X is xxxxxxxxxx
Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? _
If the disk does not already have a volume label, label prompts
you with the message:
Volume in drive X has no label
Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? _
Type the volume label that you want and press the
RETURN
key.
Or, you can press the
RETURN
key immediately if you want to
delete the volume label. Label would then prompt you with the
message:
Delete current volume label (Y/N)?_
If
you press
Y,
label deletes the volume label on the disk. Other-
wise, the volume label stays the same_
Note
You can also use the
MS-DOS
dir command to determine if
the disk already has a volume label.
Example:
Suppose you have a disk in drive A that contains sales information
for 1986. To label this disk you might type the following:
label a:sales1986
