Take the screwdriver out of the vehicle tool kit

Open the lock on cover ring : with screw-

driver = or a similar tool.
Fold tab ; down.

Pull cover ring : apart and remove it.
X
Pull off trim panel ?.
X
When re-installing cover panel ?, make sure
X
that retainer A engages into recess B.
Removing the spare wheel
The spare wheel is heavy. Take particular note of
this when removing the spare wheel.
Remove wheel nuts :.
X
Remove the spare wheel.
X
Mounting the wheel
After changing a wheel:
Repair or replace the damaged wheel as soon
X
as possible and secure the spare wheel in
place again.
Secure the damaged wheel on the spare
X
wheel bracket with wheel nuts :. When
doing so, make sure that the wheel cannot
come loose.
When re-installing trim panel ?, make sure
X
that retainer B engages in recess A
(
page 239).

Make sure that tab ; is below when re-
X
installing cover ring : (
For safety reasons, regularly check to ensure
X
that the wheel is securely fastened.

Preparing the vehicle
Stop the vehicle on solid, non-slippery and
X
level ground, as far away as possible from
traffic.
Switch on the hazard warning lamps.
X
Secure the vehicle against rolling away
X
(
page 120).
Y
If possible, bring the front wheels into the
X
straight-ahead position.
Switch off the engine.
X
Remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock.
X
The steering wheel lock stays active for as
long as the SmartKey is removed.
Make sure that the passengers are not endan-
X
gered as they do so. Make sure that no one is
near the danger area while a wheel is being
changed. Anyone who is not directly assisting
in the wheel change should, for example,
stand behind the barrier.
Get out of the vehicle. Pay attention to traffic
X
conditions when doing so.
