THE EDL PROCESS
- Log your footage
- As you are logging, note good footage (clips you are sure you'll want to use in the edited piece)
- When finished logging, review your notes and using different colored highlighters, highlight the good
parts by theme; for example, if your were doing a documentary on MNN you could highlight all the
sections that have to do with the history of public access green, and all the sections that deal with the
types of equipment MNN has blue and all the sections that are about the different types of programs on
MNN orange; and continue this until all your main themes are colored coded.
- Either transfer the parts of the log you really like (and that you have color coded) to colored note
cards or cut out the parts of your log that you've highlighted.
- Play with the pieces. Try to arrange them in a way that tells the story that your want to tell. You'll
have to fit them together like a jig saw puzzle. This will be your EDL (Edit Decision List).
- Now you have your EDL. An EDL is a list of the clips of the video, audio and time code you will use
when transferring your footage to the computer to edit your project.

Our group has been fighting with
that use of "Hip-Hop theater." As
opposed to American Theater.
That's basically what it is.
