3. MAINTENANCE TASKS

3.1. Mechanical inspection

Mechanical inspection is a matter of checking that there is no visible damage to the
radio, including the antenna, and to the mounting bracket.

3.2. Functional testing

Functional testing verifies the operation of every control, and checks that the radio
operates satisfactory on each channel.
Test battery
The battery fitted to the radio must NOT be used for functional testing. It must be
removed and a substitute battery used for the duration of the tests.
A suitable battery is the test battery, part number 84-102, or a standard battery which
is reserved for functional testing only (and which is so marked).
Operation of controls
The following section verifies the operation of each control, by describing the effect of
the control. The checks should be made in the order given. (It is obvious that the
radio must be ON before the operation of any other control can be checked.)
ON/OFF
should cause the radio to switch on. The LED
indicating Channel 16 should illuminate, the
speaker should produce noise (or a signal), and
this should reduce after 2 seconds when the
automatic squelch operates. Pressing the button
again should turn off the radio.
Squelch
signal (ie just noise) is being received should
cause the emitted sound to become much
quieter and much louder alternately.
Volume UP and DOWN These buttons should
change the volume of sound emitted by the
radio. (It may be necessary to press the Squelch
button first to produce the maximum sound.)
Channel selectors Pressing the channel
selection buttons should cause the LED
indicator (beside the button) for that channel to
flash.
Press to talk (PTT) Operating this switch
should cause the TX LED
