3.1.2.￿Rear￿bumper
The￿rear￿bumper￿support￿(with￿shock￿absorber)￿is￿bolted￿to￿the￿body.￿It￿can￿absorb￿low￿speed￿loads￿(at
least￿4￿km/h)￿without￿damage￿to￿the￿body.
The￿bumper￿system￿is￿laid￿out￿to￿meet￿consumer￿protection￿requirements￿(low￿speed￿load)￿to￿prevent
damage￿to￿the￿body.￿In￿Europe￿the￿consumer￿protection￿requirements￿are￿defined￿by￿the￿'Allianz'
Center￿for￿Technology￿AZT.￿The￿special￿design￿of￿deformation￿elements￿ensures￿economical￿repair
costs.
3.1.3.￿Roof￿railing
The￿roof￿railing￿consists￿of￿a￿flat￿longitudinal￿channel￿capable￿of￿supporting￿a￿100￿kg￿load.￿It￿is￿offered
in￿powder￿coated￿matte￿black￿(SA￿386)￿or￿satinized￿aluminum￿Eloxal￿(SA￿3AT).￿The￿roof￿lines￿are
accentuated￿by￿harmonious￿and￿highly￿contrasting￿details￿such￿as￿the￿implied￿middle￿base.

The￿special￿production￿process￿using￿inner￿high￿pressure￿metal￿forming￿and￿aluminum￿material￿has
reduced￿the￿weight￿by￿over￿30%￿in￿comparison￿to￿the￿roof￿railing￿on￿the￿E61.
The￿roof￿railing￿is￿located￿in￿the￿roof￿channel￿with￿a￿weather￿strip￿on￿each￿side.￿A￿the￿rear￿end￿it
terminates￿directly￿at￿the￿rear￿hatch￿joint.
The￿roof￿railing￿is￿bolted￿to￿the￿body￿at￿three￿points￿(torque￿19￿Nm).￿To￿remove￿it￿is￿necessary￿to
remove￿the￿roof￿trim￿strip￿and￿headliner.
3.1.4.￿Underbody￿concept
The￿smooth￿undercarriage￿of￿the￿vehicle￿prevents￿air￿turbulence￿thus￿reducing￿the￿aerodynamic￿drag
and￿improving￿the￿traction.
