3.2 Key Features

3.2.1 SEP

The Smart Ethernet Protection (SEP) protocol is a ring network protocol applied to the link layer
of an Ethernet network.
As the industrial routing and switching device, the AR500 supports SEP. As Ethernet loop
prevention mechanism, SEP applies to the Internet of Things and provides highly reliable QoS
guarantee for the Layer 2 Ethernet.

3.2.2 AMI

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a network that measures, collects, and stores
electricity information. It is an application of the Internet of Things in the electricity industry.
AMI consists of smart meters, smart terminals, communication network, front end processors,
and Meter Data Management (MDM).
An AR500 functions as a smart terminal.

An AR500 promotes interaction between the electricity systems and users, meets serious
challenges in the electricity industry, and improves AMI network reliability.
An AR500 provides data collection, data storage, data communication, electricity networking,
and operation, administration, and maintenance (OAM).
Data Collection
An AR500 provides collection of real-time data, historical data, event data, and status data. The
data collection process complies with IEC62056 (DLMS/COSEM).
Data Storage
An AR500 provides cyclic storage for minor and major events and historical data including the
load curve, hour frozen data, daily frozen data, and monthly frozen data.
Data Communication
An AR500 provides real-time data, historical data, event data, clock synchronization, and data
forwarding. The data communication process complies with IEC62056 (DLMS/COSEM).
Issue 01 (2013-5-10)
SEP eliminates loops on a Layer 2 network by blocking redundant links to prevent infinite
packet transmission. This prevents broadcast storms on the network.
SEP implements fast convergence to ensure fast switching of links when link faults occur.
An AR500 can function as an electricity data concentrator to collect data from smart meters
and provide data services for front end processors.
An AR500 can function as a router to aggregate data on smart terminals on the AMI
network.
