Replacing the Deck Belt

Squealing when the belt is rotating, blades slipping
when cutting grass, frayed belt edges, burn marks and
cracks are signs of a worn deck belt. Replace the deck
belt if any of these conditions are evident.
1.
Stop the engine, set the parking brake, remove
the key and disconnect the spark plug wire(s)
from the spark plug(s).
2.
Remove belt covers over outside spindles.
3.
Loosen outer nut on spring eye bolt (Fig. 50).

Remove belt. Start at outside pulley and rotate
off (Fig. 51).
Note:
Dot not remove spring.

POTENTIAL HAZARD
Spring is under tension when installed.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
Stored spring energy can cause personal
injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
Do not remove spring from spring eye bolt.
5.
Remove spring loaded idler pulley (Fig. 50).
6.
Route new belt through idler arm (Fig. 50).
7.
Reinstall idler pulley and route belt onto other
pulleys (Fig. 51).
8.
Retighten outer nut on spring eye bolt (Fig. 50).
Note:
Check spring length. The spring should
measure 238 mm .3 mm (9.375"
.125") when installed. Adjust if it does
not (Fig. 50).
9.
Install belt covers over outside spindles.
