2. Clean around the air cleaner to prevent dirt from
getting into the engine and causing damage. Unscrew
the cover nut and remove the air cleaner cover
(Fig. 25).
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly (Fig. 25).
4. Carefully slide the foam element off the paper element
(Fig. 25).

Cleaning the Foam Elements
1. Wash the foam element in liquid soap and warm water.
When the element is clean, rinse it thoroughly.
2. Dry the element by squeezing it in a clean cloth.
3. Put one or two ounces of oil on the element (Fig. 26).
Squeeze the element to distribute the oil.
Note: Excess oil in the foam element restricts the air flow
through the element and may reach the paper filter and
clog it.
Important
Replace the foam element if it is torn or
worn.

Inspecting the Paper Element
Important
Never clean the paper element with
pressurized air or liquids, such as solvent, gas, or
kerosene.
1. Inspect the element for tears, an oily film, and damage
to the rubber seal (Fig. 27).
2. Replace the paper element if it is damaged or
excessively dirty.

Installing the Foam and Paper Elements
Important
To prevent engine damage, always operate
the engine with the complete foam and paper air cleaner
assembly installed.

1. Carefully slide the foam element onto the paper air
cleaner element (Fig. 25).
2. Place the air cleaner assembly onto the air cleaner base
(Fig. 25).
