Section 5 - Maintenance
IMPORTANT: If anti‑fouling protection is required for the boat hull or boat transom, you
can use copper‑based paint if it is not prohibited by law. If you are using copper based
anti‑fouling paint, observe the following precaution:
Avoid an electrical interconnection between the Mercury MerCruiser Product, Anodic
Blocks, or MerCathode System and the paint by allowing a minimum of
40 mm (1‑1/2 in.) UNPAINTED area on transom of the boat around these items.
NOTE: Sterndrive and transom assembly can be painted with a good marine paint or an
anti‑fouling paint that DOES NOT contain copper or any other material that could conduct
electrical current. Do not paint drain holes, anodes, the MerCathode system or items
specified by the boat manufacturer.
Improper boat‑cleaning procedures can cause product damage. Washing the
MerCathode assembly, especially with a brush or high‑pressure washer, will damage the
MerCathode assembly making it unable to inhibit galvanic corrosion. When cleaning the
boat, do not use a brush or a high‑pressure washer to wash the MerCathode assembly
found on the bottom of the transom assembly.
