Compression
Compression allows digital signals to be reduced in size by removing unnecessary information.
Contrast ratio
This is the difference in light intensity between the lightest and darkest areas of the picture.
Decoder
A decoder translates an encoded signal back into its original form. Satellite television signals are often
encoded to limit access to subscribers only.
Digital signals
Digital signals convert the information being transmitted into a series of ones and zeros. As there are
only two possible states (0 or 1), the signal is less prone to interference.
DVD
Abbreviation for Digital Versatile Disc. An optical disc, similar to an audio CD, that contains
compressed audio and video information. Films released in DVD format can include additional
features such as directors commentary and alternative viewing angles.
