When retrieving the victim:
1. Attempt to reach the victim with a pole, rope, or life preserver.
2. Help the individual back into the vessel.
3. It is very difficult to pull a victim back into the boat via the sides.
4. The most effective recovery is at the swim platform located at the stern.
5. If the person is injured, going into the water may be the only recourse.
6. Wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and attach yourself to the vessel with a rope.
7. Handle the victim with care.
8. Be aware of spinal injuries.
9. If required, treat the victim for hypothermia.
10. If required, obtain medical attention as rapidly as possible.
