With the assistance of a
second person, measure
distance d between points 1
and 2 again and calculate the
difference (negative spring
displacement) between the two
readings.
Load-dependent adjust-
ment of spring preload
Negative spring displace-
ment of rear wheel

Your motorcycle's hand-
ling will suffer if you do not
match the spring-preload and
damping-characteristic settings.
Adjust the damping characteristic
to suit spring preload.
To reduce negative spring dis-
placement (increase spring pre-
load, in other words), use the
tool from the on-board toolkit
to turn adjusting ring 2 in dir-
ection b.
To increase negative spring
displacement (reduce spring
preload, in other words), use
the tool from the on-board
toolkit to turn adjusting ring 2
in direction a.

Damping

Setting
Damping must be adapted to suit
the surface on which the motor-
cycle is ridden and to suit spring
preload.
An uneven surface requires
softer damping than a smooth
surface.
An increase in spring preload
requires firmer damping, a re-
duction in spring preload re-
quires softer damping.
