Fault-tracing
A number of symptoms and possible reasons for engine problems are described in the table below. In case of
faults or mishaps which you cannot solve, always contact the Volvo Penta dealership.

Symptoms and possible causes
Starter motor not turning or slow
Engine will not start
Engine starts but stops again
Engine difficult to start
Engine does not reach correct speed at wide open throttle (WOT)
Engine knocks
Engine runs unevenly
Engine vibrates
High fuel consumption
Black exhaust smoke
Blue or white exhaust smoke
Low oil pressure
Engine coolant temperature too high
No or poor charging
. Discharged battery
. Loose connection/open-circuit
4. Stop control pulled out
5. Inadequate pre-heating
6. Lack of fuel
7. Fouled fuel filter
8. Air in the fuel injection system
9. Water/contaminants in the fuel
0. Boat abnormally loaded
. Fouling on underwater hull/drive/propeller
. Limited speed control lever movement
3. Insufficient air supply
4. Engine coolant temperature too high
5. Engine coolant temperature is too low
6. Lubricating oil level too low
