Setting up a Digital Cable TV Signal without a
CableCARDTM
A Digital Cable Tuner enables you to watch and record high-definition TV
and premium digital cable channels using a CableCARDTM. However, if
you do not have a CableCARD, you can still access digital cable channels
that are not encrypted (sometimes referred to as "clear QAM").
Each channel is transmitted on a unique "frequency," much like a radio
station. To set up Media Center to receive unencrypted channels, you will
use the Media Center Guide to "tune" each channel to its corresponding
frequency. By doing so, you will be able to browse Guide listings for and
watch and record unencrypted programming.
Note: You will require a basic digital subscription or an antenna or
an HD antenna to receive HD channels. Availability of QAM
channels will vary by cable provider.
1
From the Start screen, scroll to Tasks, click Settings, and then click
TV to access TV settings.
2
On the TV Settings menu, click TV Signal. Click Scan for More
Services. A dialog box may inform you that changing settings will
affect TV recording and active Extender experiences. Click Yes to
continue.
3
Click Start Scan. The PC will find a set of available frequencies
during the scanning process.
4
Next, you will manually match channel listings in the Guide to
discovered frequencies. To match a channel with a frequency, choose
a frequency.
