To find a land destination and simulate navigation in
Automotive Mode:
1. Be sure the GPSMAP 296 is set to Simulator Mode and
your location is set to San Diego, California (see
Simulator Mode"
on page 11).
2. Put the GPSMAP 296 in Automotive Mode by pressing and
holding PAGE. Highlight Automotive and press ENTER.
3. Press the NRST/FIND key to open the Find Menu.
4. Highlight Cities and press ENTER. Use the Rocker key to
select a city from the list and press ENTER. For our example,
we selected National City, CA.
5. With Go To highlighted on the city information page, press
ENTER. The GPSMAP 296 switches to the Map page. A
magenta line shows the turn-by-turn route following roads
from your current location to your Go To destination.
Observe the movement of the position marker (triangle) as
the unit simulates navigation. You do not need to adjust the
speed when simulating in Automotive Mode.

6. If desired, press IN or OUT to adjust the zoom level. Press
Page or Quit to view the simulated navigation on the other
main pages.
Continue to use the Simulator to practice navigation as needed.
When you are ready to navigate on your own, turn the Simulator off.
To turn off the Simulator:
1. Turn the unit off by pressing and holding the red POWER
key.
2. Turn the unit back on by pressing and holding the red
POWER key. The unit powers on in Normal Mode.
TIP: You can activate and deactivate the Simulator through the
Setup tab or GPS tab options menu of the Main Menu.
