The valvemust be marked with a maximum set prassurenot
to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater (150 IbsJsq.in.) and a dischargecapacitynot
lessthan the water heater input rate as shownon the model
rating plate. (Electric heaters- watts dh6ded by 1000x 3415
equal BTU/Hr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictional authority, w hile mandating the useof a
temperature-pressure relief valvecomplying with ANSI Z21.22
andASME,mayrequire a valvemodeldifferent f rom the one fop
nished with the waterheater.
Compliance with suchIocelrequirements must be satisfiedby
the installeror end userof the w_er heaterwith a locally pre-
scribed temperature-pressure r elief valveinstalled in the desig-
natodopeningin the water heater in placeof the factoryfur-
nishod valve.
Forsafeoper'_on efthe water heater,the reliefvaivemustnot
be removedfrom it_ designated o pening or plugged.
The temperature-pressure relief.v_. mustbe installed directly
intothe fittingof the waterheaterdesignated f or the reliefvaive.

valveand the tank. Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge
drain unlessa 6" air gap is provided. To preventbodilyinjury,
hazard to life, or property damage, the relief valve must be
ailowed to discharge water in quantitiesshouldcircumstances
demand. If the discharge pipe is not connectedto a drain or
other suitable means, the water flow may causeproperty
damage.
The DischargePipe:
• Mustnot be smailerin sizethan tbe outlet pipesizeof the
valve,or haveanyreducing couplings or other restrictions.
• Mustnot be plugged or blocked.
• Must be of materiel listedfor hot water distribution.
• Must be installedsoas to allowcompletedrainageof both
the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge
pipe.
• Mustterminnte at an adequatedrain.
• Must not haveanyvaivebetweentbe reliofvalveand tank.
AWARNING
The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually
operated at least once a year. Caution shouldbe taken to
ensure that (I) no one is in front of or around the outlet
of the temperature-pressure relief valve discharge line,
and (2) the water manually dischargedwill not causeany
bodily injury or property damage becausethe water may
be extremely hot.
If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely
reset and continues to release water, immediately, close
the cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the drain.
ing instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure
relief valve with a new one.
