This charger adjusts t hecharging time in
order t o charge thebattery completely,
efficiently andsafely. Themicroproces-
sorautomatically makes t henecessary
decisions. However, thissection i ncludes
guidelines thatcanbeusedtoestimate
charging times.
The duration o fthecharging process de-
pends o nthree factors:
1.Battery S tate - Ifa battery h asonly
been slightly d ischarged,
itcanbe
charged i nless than a fewhours.
The same battery c ould take upto10
hours i fvery weak. The battery s tate
canbeestimated byusing t hebuilt-in
tester ( seepage 11 ).The lower t he
reading thelonger charging will t ake.
2. Battery r ating - Ahigher rated
battery w ill t ake longer tocharge
than a lower r ated battery u nder the
same conditions.
Abattery i srated in
ampere-hours
(AH), r eserve capacity
(RC) a nd cold cranking amps (CCA).
Thelower therating thequicker the
battery w illbecharged.
3.Charge rate - The charge r ateis
measured inamps. This charger
provides charge r ates of2A,12A
and30A. T he 80A rate isforengine
start o nly. T he 2Arate isforcharg-
ingsmaller batteries such asthose
used formotorcycles
and garden
tractors. Such batteries should n otbe
charged u sing t he12A or3OA rate.
The12A and30A rates areforcharg-
inglarger batteries. Inthe30A mode,
thecharger begins a ta low-charge
rate andincreases-the
charge r ate if
itisdetermined that t hebattery c an
accept thehigher rate. A llcharging
modes willdecrease thecharge r ate
asthebattery a pproaches
maximum
charge. After t hecharging process
has started, thedigital display canbe
used todetermine charging progress
byselecting theBATTERY %mode.
There a resome important facts tokeep in
mind when charging a battery.
When thedisplay i ndicates 77%
charged, thebattery h asbeen charged
enough tostart m ost vehicles andhas
already been charged asmuch asby
many o ther b attery chargers.
When thedisplay i ndicates 85%
charged, thebattery h as already b een
charged atleast a smuch asbymost
other b attery c hargers.
The battery % shown i ntester m ode

scale. The battery %
shown i ncharger mode isanestimate

The more abattery i sdischarged,
the faster i tabsorbs charge f rom a
charger. That m eans thatthebattery
%increases faster a tthebeginning
ofthecharging process than atthe
end. I nother words, ittakes longer
forthebattery t oabsorb t helast f ew
percent ofcharge t han thefirst s everal
percent.
