Removethespark plug bootand use a sparkplug wrenchto
removethe plug.See Figure21.

Visuallyinspectthe spark plug.Discardthe spark plug if thereis
apparentwear,or if the insulatoris crackedor chipped.Cleanthe
sparkplug with a wirebrush if it is to be reused.

Measure the pluggap witha feelergauge.Correctas necessaryby
bendingsideelectrode.SeeFigure22.Thegap shouldbe 0.030".

Checkthatthe sparkplug washeris in good conditionand thread
the sparkplug in by handto preventcrossthreading.

After thespark plug is seated,tightenwith a spark plugwrenchto
compressthe washer.
NOTE:Wheninstalling a newsparkplug,tighten1/2turnafterthe spark
plugseatstocompressthewasher.Whenreinstalling a usedsparkplug,
tighten1/8-1/4 turnafterthespark plugseatsto compress thewasher.
Servicing
the Air Cleaner
Neverusegasolineor lowflash point solventsfor cleaningtheair
cleanerelement.A fireor explosioncould result.
The air cleanerpreventsdamagingdirt, dust,etc., from enteringthe
carburetorand being forcedintothe engineand is importantto engine
lifeand performance.Neverrunthe enginewithoutan air cleaner
completelyassembled.Checkthe air cleanerbeforeeachuse.
Paperfilterscannot be cleanedand mustbe replacedoncea year
or every 100operatinghours;moreoften if usedin extremelydusty
conditions.

Pressthetab on the air filtercover,lift the coverand removethe
air filter.See Figure23.

Cleaning
the Engine
Do notsprayengine with waterto cleanbecausewater could
contaminatefuel. Usinga gardenhoseor pressurewashingequip-
mentcan alsoforce waterintothe muffleropening.Waterthat passes
throughthe mufflercan enterthe cylinder,causingdamage.
Accumulationof debrisaround mufflercouldcausea fire. Inspectand
clean beforeevery use.
If the enginehas been running,allow it to coolfor at leasthalf an hour
beforecleaning.Periodically removedirt build-upfrom the engine.
Cleanaroundthe muffler.Cleanwith a brushor compressed air.
