Migrating from a FICON bridge to a native FICON attachment

FICON bridge overview

The FICON bridge is a feature card of the ESCON Director 9032 Model 5. The FICON bridge
supports an external FICON attachment and connects internally to a maximum of eight ESCON links.
The volume on these ESCON links is multiplexed on the FICON link. You can perform the conversion
between ESCON and FICON on the FICON bridge.

FICON bridge configuration

The following figure shows an example of a FICON bridge. It consists of an S/390 or zSeries host
with two FICON channels attached to two FICON bridges. You can attach the storage unit through
the channel-path group to four ESCON links.

FICON and FICON channel mixed configuration

The following figure provides an example of an S/390 or zSeries host system with one FICON channel
and one FICON director through a channel-path group and FICON host adapter to the storage unit.
The example also shows that the S/390 or zSeries host system with one FICON channel and one
ESCON director with a FICON bridge through a channel-path group and two ESCON adapters.
