This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not
a comprehensive glossary of computer terms.
Active state
A state in which a path is currently designated as a preferred or alternate path for data path
management.
Alternate path
A path that is used for LUN access only after all preferred paths to the device have failed.
Alternate paths are assigned by the software and are considered by the software to be non-optimal
paths. You may also designate preferred paths as alternate paths.
Automatic failback
Following the failover of a LUN path from a failed path to another path, the LUN automatically
returns to its original path when the path is restored.
Controller
The hardware device that facilitates communication between a host and one or more specified
LUNs.
Controller failover
For EVAs and EMAs in multibus controller failover mode, when you have more than one
controller, failover between the two controllers requires host intervention; it does not happen
automatically.
Critical state
The condition of a system where there are no more available physical paths; the system is currently
using the last available path for communication. Keep in mind that individual path failure
(warning) is only reported when all paths have failed for an activated volume group (critical).
Failed state
A state that indicates that all redundant components have failed and the system is not operational.
If you have an HA system and have set up package failover, associated packages have probably
already failed over.
