5 Faulty Printing

Print Problems
Symptom
Paper contamination
Spur tracks appear.
Lines are not ruled
properly.
Corrugated printing
Print quality is not
uniform.
The printout is either
too light or too dark.
The printing darkness
is unbalanced.
* It is difficult to check the head gap. Readjust the head gap, then check whether it fixes this problem.
Check item
Ink mist on the platen
Ink has dried up around the
head nozzles. (No paper stain
occurs by paper feeding or
ejecting but occurs during
printing only.)
Ink has clogged or paper bits
have stuck around the head
wiper or head capping area of
the purge unit.
Ink has adhered to the paper
transport system (Paper is
already contaminated before
it reaches the platen.)
Ink has adhered to the spurs.
The spurs are deformed.
The BJ cartridge has been
installed incorrectly.
The head is not aligned
properly.
The problem occurs when
your BJ cartridge (which may
cause this problem) is
installed in a normally-
operating printer.
The head gap has not been
adjusted to the regulated
value (You cannot check to
see if this gap is
appropriate*).
The carriage guide frame is
deformed.
Frictional wear between the
carriage base and the carriage
shaft.
The head has not been
aligned properly.
Insufficient cleaning / Ink
run-out / Faulty BJ cartridge
Check the printing mode.
The BJ cartridge is faulty.
The head has not been
aligned properly.

Corrective action
Use a piece of soft cloth
lightly damped with water to
clean the platen.
Clean the head nozzles and
their surroundings several
times. If the problem
persists, replace the BJ
cartridge.
Replace the purge unit or
wiper unit.
Disassemble the paper
transport system, then use a
piece of soft cloth lightly
damped with water to clean
the platen.
Use a soft toothbrush to clean
the spurs.
Replace the spurs.
Reinstall the BJ cartridge
correctly.
Use the printer driver to
perform the automatic head
alignment operation.
Replace the BJ cartridge.
Adjust the head gap (See "5.
Adjustments" on page 5-8).
Replace the carriage guide
frame.
Replace the carriage unit.
Use the printer driver to
perform the automatic head
alignment operation.
Perform the cleaning
operation several times, then
execute a test print.
Replace the BJ cartridge.
