GDL 39 SERIAL PASS-THROUGH
NOTE: Serial Pass-Through is only available on a bare wire installation.
The GDL 39 is capable of passing serial data from the aera to an additional serial
device. The aera should be connected to channel A (Green, White/Green wires) on
the GDL 39. To utilize the serial pass-through capability of the GDL 39, connect
an additional serial device to GDL 39 channel B (Orange, White/Orange wires) and
configure the serial pass-through format on the aera. On the Interface Setup Page, the
following serial formats are available for GDL 39 Pass-Through:
• None
• NMEA Out
• Aviation In
• Aviation In/NMEA & VHF Out
• GTX TIS-A In
• GTX TIS-A In/NMEA & VHF Out
Scroll down on the Interface Setup Page to view additional settings for the NMEA
Output Mode (Normal/Fast) and/or the pass-through connection status.
Configuring aera and GDL 39 for Serial Pass-Through:
1) Connect the aera to the GDL 39 using a bare wire installation.
2) From the Main Menu, touch Tools > Setup > Interface.
3) Touch the 'Serial Data Format' data field button. A vertical list is displayed.
4) Touch 'Garmin Data Transfer'. When recognized, the GDL 39 device and
connections information is shown.
5) Touch the 'GDL 39 Pass-Through Serial Format' data field button. A vertical
list is displayed.
6) Touch the desired data format ('NMEA Out', 'Aviation In', 'Aviation In/
NMEA & VHF Out', 'GTX TIS-A In', 'GTX TIS-A In/NMEA & VHF Out',
or 'None').
7) Scroll down to view additional settings for the NMEA Output Mode
(Normal/Fast) and/or the pass-through connection status.
