Installing an I/O expansion card
If the BladeCenter unit supports I/O expansion, you can add an I/O expansion card
to the blade server. An I/O expansion card provides additional connections for
communicating on a network.
Your blade server supports installation of one I/O expansion card of either the
small-form-factor or standard-form-factor design. Some expansion cards are
available as both small-form-factor cards and standard-form-factor cards. Other
expansion cards are available only as standard-form-factor cards. See the
ServerProven list at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/ for
a list of available I/O-expansion cards and their form-factor types.
You cannot install both sizes of I/O-expansion card in a blade server at the same
time. You can install a small-form-factor expansion card in addition to two SCSI
hard disk drives. You cannot install a standard-form-factor expansion card into a
blade server with two SCSI hard disk drives. When you add an I/O-expansion card,
you must make sure that the I/O modules it is mapped to both support the
expansion card network-interface type.
The blade server supports a number of I/O expansion cards types, such as:
v Gigabit Ethernet expansion card
v Fibre Channel expansion card
v Myrinet expansion card
The following sections describe how to install an I/O expansion card in the blade
server.
Installing a small-form-factor expansion card
Install a small-form-factor expansion card near SCSI connector 1 (J12). To install a
small-form-factor expansion card, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information beginning on page v and "Installation guidelines" on
2. Shut down the operating system, turn off the blade server, and remove the
3. Carefully lay the blade server on a flat, non-conductive surface.
4. Open the cover (see "Opening the blade server cover" on page 17 for
5. Install the small-form-factor expansion card, as shown in the following
