Emergency Starting
with Jumper Cables
lmproper
use
of
booster battery to
a
vehicle
may
cause an
explosion.
Lead-acid batteries
generate
gases. Keep sparks,
llame and
lighted
cigarettes
away
lrom
balteries.
Do
not
charge
a
frozen battery, thaw
out first,
Gas
trapped
in
the
ice
cause an exp,osion.
No
attempt
should
be made
to
jump
any
vehicle
with
a
low
electrolyte
level
the
battery.
Check electrolyte level
ot
each
cell.
necessary,

water

Make sure
the voltage
of
both
is

same.
The capacity (Ah)
of the booster
should
not be
lower
than that ol
discharged
battery.
Vehicle

booster battery

running. Disconnecl ground
cable.
Remove
vent
caps
from
booster
and discharged
battery. Preferably
lay
cloth
over open
vents
to
reduce
sion
hazard.

cables

ruin

allernator.
Always
connecl
POSITIVE
(+) to
POSITIVE
(+), and
NEGATM
(-)
lo
ground on
engine
block.
1.
Connect clamp
of
plus-cable
to
positive
(+) terminal of discharged
battery
(1).
2.
Connect clamp on opposite end
of
cable
to
positive
(+) terminal of
booster battery
(2j.
3.
Connect clamp
of
minus-cable
to
nega-
tive
(-)
terminal
of
booster battery
(3).
4.
Connect clamp on opposite end of
cable
to
a bare metal
part bolted directly to the
engine block or
to
the
engine
block itsell
(x) oI
car
with
discharged battery.
Con-
nect clamp as
far
away
from
battery
as
possible.
Start engine
in the
usual manner.
lf
en-
gine
fails
to
start,
do
not
continue to
crank but contact
nearest workshop.
With engine
running,
remove
jumper
cab-
les
from both
cars in exact reverse order:

Reconnect

cable
of
booster
bat-
tery.
