CHAPTER ZERO
Seek Time
First time through "Diagnostic"?
The list of test functions should· now be printed
and you should have already performed the
"Drive Speed," "General Checkout" and "Media
Check" tests.
This test will vary the track seek time of your unit in order to determine its
highest reliable speed.
The drive assemblies are guaranteed to perform reliably at a seek time of
30
milliseconds. You can check the optimum seek time using "tests" supplied with
your disk software. If you are using dual drives, your fastest possible seek speed
will be determined by your slower drive assembly.
Remember, the seek speed can change as a unit "wears in". If frequency errors
occur, you should re-run the seek test to check for possible changes in your drive
assembly speed. Again, the drives supplied with the operating system are
specified at
30
mS only.
1.
Type S and a carriage return. You will be asked if you wish to proceed.
If you reply "NO", the list of test functions will be printed again.
2.
Type YES and a carriage return.
The first interval to be attempted is
36
milliseconds. This information will be
printed on your console. Shorter intervals will be attempted until your disk
drive's best capability is determined. As each pass is completed, the message
"OK!" will be printed.
The test will require a few· minutes for completion. When it is finished, the
message "Drive performs reliably at nnn milliseconds per track." will be printed
out, where "nnn" is the optimum interval for your unit. Record this number for
future reference.

_________ Date
If you purchased two drives, you can perform this test again after "System
Generation," or you can switch to the
se~ond
drive and repeat the test, as
explained in the "Switch" procedure. The "General Operation" section of Chap-
ter
1
will explain how to set your system for the speed of the slower of the two
drives.
